Is this a year that has the rear mounted gas tank issue that went into recall due to fires in rear end collisions? I just ran across an article from a while back about it, but it makes it unclear about the years, if it was recalled and if it was fixed. I'm looking to put my kids in the back of one, so... yeah...

The 99 is the first year of the WJ, the ZJ was 93-98. I know the ZJ is under the recall, not sure about the WJ, I do know the WJ gas tank hangs down a lot lower than the ZJ, and I can't imagine that is any safer.

All jeeps under that recall are available to receive a trailer hitch that will protect it from impact. Oddly enough when I checked my 00 WJ purchased from a good friend I entered the VIN on the Chrysler website and said it was not under that recall. But after scanning junk yards I found a pristine hitch and all of the "tow package" wiring that goes with it for under $50

If you think about it a gas tank isn't really safe anywhere on a vehicle....

True.. true...

So, the one I am looking at touts having a "tow package" this would correct the issue?
And if I go for one in the future... ask if it has had the recall parts (which apparently includes a "metal shield on the gas tank, a stronger filler hose and a check valve in the tank to prevent gas from flowing out should there be a crash") or look to see if it has a nice tow hitch...
