Going tomorrow to look at a 99 Silverado old body style with the 305 in it apparently. I know a good bit about the 5.7's but what should I look for in the 305 for problems and elsewhere on the truck, not too familiar with this generation other than the 5.7 motors. Its the original owner with a lot of service records.

***This will not be a tow rig, just to get around in the winter and haul the 4wheelers around from time to time***

Thanks in Advance

I didn't know they put a 305 in them in 99 but anyways.....any vortec motor you should check the intake. The intake gaskets are bad for leaking, coolant may leak at the corners front or back or into the engine. So check the oil and pop the radiator cap and see if it is low.

yeah early 99 there are still some K1500 Silverados made with the 305 and 350. I will def be sure to check that.

make sure it is a 305 and not a 4.8

The work van has a 4.8 and it does pretty well....loaded all the time.

any particular reason than being underpowered?

I was just saying there wa the lil bastid V8 4.8 that wwas nott a 305.

Owned a 4.8 99 GMC and a 4.3V6 99 Silverado....the 4.3 had felt like it had much better power and got better mpg....but I can not tell you what gearing either had so YMMV
IMHO the 4.8 was a dog

if it was an old body, LS motor is not in it. (4.8,5.3,6.0) fuel pumps, intake gaskets and head cracking are the only major problems i've had with the 8 vortecs on the farm. the heads cracked around the number 6 cylinder on both my 98 1500 and the GFs 98 tahoe, but a bottle of head sealer fixed hers. its been 15000 miles since. the rest of em we caught before they got hot. and they all have over 150000 miles, with the 2000 2500 454 rollin on 240000. (yeah it goes everywhere). great engines in my opinion, just dont let em get hot.
