1999 tj 4.0 auto. the transfer case goes into 4wd good, but when i try 4wd low it make a horrible grinding noise. any suggestions on what to check? thanks

Did it shift normally before? Does it operate normally when you get it in 4l? What happens if you put it in 4l while the engine is off? Does it come out of 4l normally? Does it "grind" when you pull the lever back or when you put it back in Drive/reverse? It's been a few years since my TJ had a np231 but as I remember I had to be dead stopped with the transmission in neutral. Occasionally I might need to move the Jeep a few inches for it to slide in. No force should be exerted on the transfer case while stopped and transmission in neutral therefore nothing should be spinning to grind. Hope that helps.

Still shouldn't grind if stopped or barly moving. I curently have an atlas II, it has issues sifting too but you get used to it.

If you lifted or has a lift on it, has the transfer case linkage been adjusted?

If you want to bring it over I would be happy to take a look at it. I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I do what I can.

if there is something wrong with the case I have one i am currently trying to get rid of that is in good shape....other than that i second the linkage idea...they get a little testy with lift changes....shoot they are testy at stock hieght..not the best design for a tcase shifter.

these guys have a good aftermarket shifter assembly that helps correct some of the issues that the tcase has orginially and the problems it has once its lifted.
