'99 XJ check engine light

check engine light went on ('99 XJ 4.0L)...do I need a scanner to read the codes? The 3x on-off trick didnt do anything. I thought there was a way to get the codes to display on the digital odo.

You can come to Winston and ill scan it.. or just go buy advance and they will scan if for free.

(Most every parts store will scan it for you for free)
