So I have what's left of a 99 Toyota reg cab 2wd. I have owned this truck since 2000, back then I was into lowered rigs, it had an airbag setup with a 4link rear end, I rolled the truck tore the back end completely off and smashed the cab a bit. So since the its been sitting with a drive-train that has only 50,000 miles on it. So I figured I'm gonna turn this once lowrider into a monster!

This is defiantly gonna be a project, I am starting with half a truck, I am planning on fully tubing the back half, cutting off the front and using 2x3 to rework it. I am building on a budget, with that said my next step is to get some new running gear, what would be an upgrade and also easy on the pockets?

Yea that's going to be tough given what it sounds like you want to do with it. Jeep Waggy D44 front, Tacoma rear axle, transfer case (I have one for sale BTW), adapters, lots of fab work, parts, etc.

You are gonna have alot of $$ in the truck... It would be cheaper to make a prerunner (2wd) on about 33's or 35's than it would be to convert to 4wd.

If you MUST go 4wd, then the www.Inchwormgear.com adapter would allow you to bolt up a gear driven transfer case. IF you do that, be sure to decide before you buy a front axle, if you use a gear driven case (strongest), you will need a passenger side drop axle. If you convert to a 4wd style transmission and t-case, that will be chain driven, and driver side drop. The chain drive case is pretty strong, but you don't have any options to add lower gearing other than doing dual cases.

You should check out my Tacoma build, it might give you some ideas, if I had to do it all over again, I think I might have done a 4wd long travel IFS setup.
