When changing your oil, always make sure the old filter's gasket came off with the filter...

Changed the oil in my Dodge today and was replacing the filter, and something just didn't feel right. I took the new filter off to find the old filter's gasket still on there.

Glad I figured it out before I fired the truck or it would have been one heck of a mess :D

Years ago I made the same mistake but I didn't catch it until I fired it up and looked underneath to see if there were any leaks. What an ungodly mess! That's one of those mistakes you only make once!

did that once myself years ago really made a hell of a mess but always check old filter after that one time

We have a trophy at work for this exact thing. Labeled the "Jed Clampett Flush Award".

About 3 months ago, my nephew was over here changing the oil in his XJ. He'd never done it so I was showing him the ropes.
Apparently as he was lowering the filter down in to put it on, the rubber gasket actually fell off, neither of us saw it... cranked it up and boom oil everywhere.. yeah thankfully I always look under for leaks.
Boy that was a mess, and had to run out to the local grocery (was 11pm Sun, he had to drive to work next morning) to get a jug of cat litter and more oil.

First time I've ever seen that, the gasket just wasn't fully crimped in place. Took us a little while to figure out what happened.

Probably a Fram filter!

Fram is the worst filter on the market. They are total crap. I would run no filter before I ran a Fram. I used to work for Purolator, we used to run Fram filters in the test lab when we were bored and they would implode so easily.

So what's your opinion on Purolator? o_O
Didn't know we had an expert in the crowd, maybe we need a spin-off thread
(and yes that was intended)

I run Purolator filters in all of my vehicles, won't run anything different.

And I fucking HATE those assholes. Worst job I have ever had and worst people I have ever had to deal with in my LIFE. So you know they are good when I continue to support them when I would like to kill them.

That is good to hear because I have always used purolator and I just switched this Fram back to purolator

The trucks I work on hold 40-46 qts of oil so you can imagine the mess when one gets a double gasket I've not done it yet but had a guy do one last week
