A Good GPS

I'm finally going to do it. I got screwed up at an intersection this afternoon due to some obviously highly-engineered NCDOT multiple-choice road signage. I have finally decided to bite-the-bullet and get a GPS. I would like to hear some recommendations for a good reliable unit that will accurately get me from point "A" to point "B". I neither like nor want bells & whistles, plus a million other useless functions... I just want a reliable GPS. Advice please..... and ThanX. :)

I use the one on my phone and love it because I always have it with me and no need for someone to break my window to steal it....

I have been using Garmins of one type or another for probably close to 15 to 18 years now. Ever since we had the old Pluggers back during Desert Storm i started learning them.

I've not had good luck with either a Garmin or a Tom Tom. Both will try to prove to you that they know every short cut through the ghetto and projects in town. While going to visit my brother in D.C. my Garmin all of a sudden thought we were on the frontage road that was right next to the interstate and then was trying to re route me back onto the interstate at one helluva confusing cloverleaf which then got me turned around and heading back the wrong way. The other thing I hate about them is that when they recalculate the trip, they recalculate the WHOLE thing and give you a totally different rout. Not just "get me back on the interstate and continue to take me the quickest route to my destination. After I finally gave up and ignored everything it was trying to tell me I got back on the interstate going the right direction, and once it got me close to my brothers house it had me drive 25 minutes back and forth across the street he lived on because of all the recalculating it did after it turned me around. Personally I'm going to stick with a map from here on out.

We have four Garmins and couldn't be happier with them. My only gripe would is that my wife can use it to see how fast we are going from the passenger side. Get one with lifetime map updates, two of ours are outdated and the update is more than half what the GPS cost.

I bought a TomTom and a month later bought a Garmin. I prefer Garmins, lots easier to use and seem to load faster. Can't beat the price either.

I like the Garmin my wife has, my phone GPS also works great. Just be aware that they ALL will send you a screwed up way at one time or another. Also, make sure you do a map update atleast every couple years.

We have had a Tom Tom for several years now and have been pleased. Before that I had a Nokia and it was a piece of :poop:.

I know you said you don't want bells and whistles, but I would strongly suggest one that can say the names of the street. For example, If you are in a location where there are more than 1 intersection close to each other, you want the GPS to say "turn left on 4th ave" instead of just "turn left."

The $99 Garmin Nuvi does that, and I like it! Make the lady speak spanish and you'll be surprised how fast you learn it.

Don, I have a Garmin 1450 LMT and really like it a lot. You can buy one refurbished on line very reasonable. This thing is amazing.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 50 for my wife that I've used on occasion. I paid about $130 for it with lifetime map updates. It gets the job done. As always, use a little common sense and don't end up like this lady: http://www.wtsp.com/news/article/26...s-car-into-golf-course-sand-bunker-blames-GPS

Never mind that she had drank half a liter of vodka.
this is the one I just bought a couple months ago. haven't used it alot but it's basically just like the one I had before. Buy it online at Bestbuy.com and it will be cheaper than the store. But you can still pick it up in store. As far as bells and whistles you'll be surprised if you mess with it a few min you will find a few of the b/w to be very helpful.

This.

The other problem is a lot of time, the GPS will try to tell you to make a left turn where you can't turn left, or send you the wrong way up a wrong way street. At least if you're doing it on your phone through Google maps, you can highlight the problem area, and they'll correct it in a matter of days. The standalone GPS just has whatever maps were installed on it from the factory.

We have a Garmin and we haven't used it since we got our Android phones. I like that our phones automatically update the GPS.

On our Garmin we took a new road once and the GPS was going crazy, showing us driving through fields and lakes and things, yelling at us to make a u-turn and stuff. My kids got a kick out of that.

I use teh one on my Droid. It has never lead me astray and I used it constantly since I never know from one day to the next where my work will be. All I can tell you about a Garmin or a Tom-tom is that they have trouble finding my house. I usually have to go find the people that have them and are trying to find me.

Never used one, & don't have a clue! But a week ago, was working in Chester, SC. Another driver, & I, had to find a landfill, about 30+ miles south, on Hwy 49. Crew we hauled for, gave him their Garmin/TomTom. They called it both? It was programmed. It also led us in circles for 30 min. And told us to turn left on a side road, 300' before Hwy 49, again running in circles! Between my Paper map, & driving ALL the roads, we found the landfill!
