I thought I'd share this story with the folks here.
It started 38 weeks ago. Some of the folks might remember my What to do in Charleston thread. My wife and I celebrated 10 years visiting the city and surrounding low country (magnolia plantation). A few weeks later I was woken up by the wife holding a EPT test. Oh boy! We were excited and started looking into home births and possible birth centers.
A few weeks later after a blood test, my wife started to develop antibodies. And soon they reached a critical level. I apparently have a little c antigen protein on my blood cells and she doesn't. After the critical level we were admitted to baptist maternal fetal medicine where we would go weekly to have Doppler scans of the baby's head (Middle cerebral artery). They use this scan to gauge anemia in the baby. If the level get to high blood transfusions are required for the baby to survive. Our weekly tests always hovered right below this critical number.
At 24 weeks baby went into breached position and wouldn't turn. We tried everything we could conventional and unconventional to get the baby to flip, including some acupuncturist who burned some grass substance on my wife's toes while sticking her feet with needles. We tried it all.
We decided early on to not find out the gender of this baby. We couldn't have the birth we wanted, so we decided to keep the gender unknown and keep a little surprise for us at the birth.
We were told that the baby would need to be delivered before 38 weeks so we scheduled to go in for a ECV (external cephalic version) last Friday, with the hopes that they could get the little one flipped and induce a natural labor. After two attempts and watching the heart rate go from 145 down to the low 40s, we decided with the advice of the doctors to stop and go straight to preop. We scrubbed in a little after 10pm Friday night and at 10:40 my daughter was born. She had been in the breached position for 14 weeks and when they were pulling her out we found out why. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times. Basically tying her in that position. There is nothing more intense than those quick moments seeing the Drs pulling your baby out and quickly untying that noose. It was a incredible moment I never want to repeat.
I'm so thankful to be married to strong beautiful woman that gave me a strong beautiful daughter. And I truly believe, without the many folks that were praying for us and the grace of God, this could have ended so much different.
