i tore the rear end out of the xj last weekend.ive never even opened the rear end up of anything. but i need to take it all apart and see what happened. so how hard is it to pull the axle and gears out?im pretty mechanicly inclined. ive been workin on quads for years.complete rebuilds and such. just not much on cars and trucks. so... where do i begin once inside the housing?

First thing you need to do is take off the cover and have a look-see and find out what failed. Also, while you're at it, figure out which axle it is. That'll help you/us determine what your nest options will be.

a Dana 35 rearend? Don't waste your time, replace with a 8.25.

im getting one picked up today.so change of gameplan here.its geared 3.55 im guessing its the same as the front? im not really sure how to tell whats in the front now. but looks like im gonna be doing a axle swap.this will be a 1st also. looks simple enuff though. just un bolt the u bolts and brake lines right?

Usually there is a tag attached to one of the diff cover bolts that will tell you ratio, assuming it is still the original gears. If not, open diff cover and count teeth on ring gear and pinion gear. Verify front gear ratio and rear gear ratio match before you put it into 4WD or you'll be fixing more.

Don't forget to bleed your brake lines.

Be very careful because you will the jeep high to get the axle out. So make sure it is supported very well. Also no emergency brake so chock the frt tires.

ok i got the rear axle out today.the spyder gears that were welded busted all up.i guess who ever had welded it didnt do so good.i just want to be sure my gearing is right. the one i took out had 39 teeth on the ring and 11 on the pinion.i am guessing thats 3.55? so i should be good with the 8.25 axle i just got

Yep, you sound like you've got it all set.
