OK so I am running a 2.5" spun hi flo cat and 2.5" Dynomax bullet muffler with a stock tailpipe with a 3" tip. I am happy with the overall tone of my exhaust but I know it can sound alot better. I still want the exhaust to route out the back or possibly out to the side without a complete l bent piece of pipe turning out to the side. I know that I could use stainless steel piping to increase the tone, but thats out of my price range. Just would like some input on what I could do.

By the way, this is on my XJ 4.0L

IMO, short of a chambered muffler like a magnaflow or flowmaster, all 4.0 exhausts sound the same. No muffler, no cat, cherry bomb muffler, etc. As long as you still have a tailpipe it sounds the same. Want something meaner sounding, add a header, up the compression ratio and change out the cam or swap in a v8.

Well i can tell you this about making it loud the ghetto way, if you dont want to be stuck driving your friends places just cut the muffler off.If you would like to be able to hear yourself think ,much less the people riding with you then i wouldnt cut it off.Just a little advice.
Oh also if you cut the muffler off you can full some idiots in to think that you are the only kid on the block with a diesel jeep:driver:

Well I dont want it to be annoying loud and I hate the rumble under my feet of having the exhaust cut off after the muffler. I was thinking about just getting a custom 2.5" tail pipe bent and then maybe have it exit just over the axle.

i have flow tech headers with folwtech mufflers turn down under the bed. right now its 302 stock. not real loud a idle. just deep sound. still able to talk with out porblem.
had cherry bomb mounted with in 6" of header was just load for me. i personly think any thing with turn down is louder to me. something about the echoing of the ground
