I have a 1994 yj. Lifted, 35's, 4.88's, lockers...
It's outgrown the road. I wanted a part time vehicle.
I bought a 1992 chevy extended cab for 750. Good deal, clean engine outside, few maintance problems.
305 engine, 2wd, 220,000 miles (mostly hwy miles; only 4,000 in the last 4 years). :poop:

I thought the oil pressure sensor was broken. Nope. I checked the oil and it had none. I added 3 quarts. He hadn't changed the oil in a while, a long while. It smokes on start up.
The oil is definately bad.

Can changing the oil stop the smoking?
Is ATF a good way to flush the engine?
Would anyone use the engine flush?
Any other suggestions?

The powersteering pressure hose is leaking. Is that a simple attach two ends swap?
I need to replace the radiator. Any advice? There's 4 tranny coolant lines in the radiator, will they cause a problem?
Thanks.

An engine flush , or changing the oil wont solve the problems. A couple things could be the culprit, Bad valve guides or seals , Bad Cylinder, Bad rings , Really the possibilties are endless! Are you hearing and unusual noise? And other symptoms of problems like oil in coolant or vice versa? knocks or somthing? A Engine flush wont help your symptoms , it'll just clean componets already worn, and possibly make the situation worse!

smoke - nope, high mileage issue (probably valve seals) , just keep putting some in not too big a deal, just monitor usage.

Dont use atf to flush it. Just do an oil change now, run it a while and change it again. Not sure what your looking to get out of it. What are you looking to tow your jeep on/with?

towing - you didnt mention if it was 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton, but look into a Weight Distributing hitch, and a trailer with 2 brake axles to help the truck out some.

radiator- advice ? uhh try the part store they sell new ones :) if there are 4 lines 2 are tranny, other 2 probably oil cooler. Are there lines coming out near where the oil filter area is ? Becarful with the lines or your $750 truck will start costing you more and more..

tranny - you mentioned cooler lines, my guess is its a 700r4, at a min, check the fluid and go from there.

steering hose, yup, pressure line will leak after 200k.

other - crawl under the front end and check the front suspension, make sure nothing, about to fall off. Chevy can go a long while with no maintenance but you should at least check stuff before towing with it. Check tie rods, etc..

yager, I need to get up with you on somthing at some point, but i wont be able to tonight! I'll hit you up on PM tommrow!

If the 305 is already smoking and has over 200k on it, I think I would be looking for a running 350 to swap in its place.

As stated above, an oil change/flush won't stop it from smoking.
Depending on the condition of the inside of the engine would be my deciding factor to flush or not to flush. I have used ATF and Kerosene, a Qt each, and three Qt's of oil to flush one. If it's really gunked up be ready to stop up the oil return holes. It does a pretty good job. After running 10 mins or so, I usually change oil about twice after wards. Each time the oil will look better and better. Change the filter each time too.
The smoke is probably Valve guides or Valve seals. Could also be partly rings, but ring wear usually smokes all the time, not just start up.
a 305 won't be too good of a work engine, especially with that kinda miles.

This made me think of somthing. Return Holes in the head can be partially clogged and cause it to smoke like crazy but its somewhat rare, and also a valve cover leak normally comes with it!

Wow someone actually got a 305 to 200K

I got my 350 to 189k :driver:

On the radiator thing, you can go to a junkyard and yank one, pretty much every chevy I've dealt with the radiators are swappable, if you can find a big block radiator at a junkyard snag it. Thats what I did min runs at like 160/170 all the time now . . . . which is weird I don't know how the water is circulating cause I'm pretty sure the thermostat is much higher . . . . .

#1 A radiator is one of those things where a junk yrd one usually costs more in the end than a new one. Brnad spanking new you are looking at 150-200, or save 50-75 dollars and get one that may or may not hold up to pressure may already be clogged, etc. I would just go to AA and buy a stock replacement. And of course the JY piece needs the same inlets etc.

#2 Where is your temp sensor? Have you stuck a thermometer in the radiator yet? Unless you have a relief by pass hose you wont run cooler than the T-stat setting. of course temp sensor could be bad, or with all the mods you've done it could be not deep enough to fully submerge and be giving false readings.

Well it worked the same before I did all the engine swap stuff, cause I swapped the new radiator in before I did the engine swap and it was running 160/170. Plus it used to be in the 81 I had and it would also run 160/170ish. The thermostat is new, I just don't remember what temp thermostat i got, I thought it was stock . . . .
