So last night the wife and I are watching TV in the basement, and I hear a funny noise. I look around and I see my dogs all asleep on the floor, so I know it is not them making this noise. I mute the TV and then I realize what I am hearing. It must have been the mouse olympics last night because I swear they were running 100 meter dashes in the crawl space above the ceiling.

Now I am no stranger to mice, and have caught my fair share, but I have always caught them in the open (like behind the oven, in the garage, etc.) When mice are in the crawl space, how do you get rid of them? I don't want to poison them and then have them die (and smell) in the walls/crawl space.

Any suggestions or ideas?

I used the old fashioned wooden ones for years, and they worked just fine, but today's version, in my opinion, is not worth buying. That being said, I found these: http://www.amazon.com/Ortho-0321110-Defense-Press-2-Pack/dp/B003YL4MG0

I bought a pair of them to try out. They are simple, easy to bait and set, and they work! I now have a half dozen of them; 3 in the garage and 3 in the basement. I don't throw them away. Toss them in a bucket of hot water and greased lightning a couple times a year and you are good to go. Hope this helps! :)

I made a mouse trap for the shop, caught 6 in one night with it.

Take a 5-gallon bucket. Drill a 1/4 inch hole in either side of the rim. Get a plastic coke bottle, drill a little bit bigger hole in the lid, and one in the bottom. Run a rod thru the bucket and bottle. Be sure that the bottle spins freely. Coat the bottle with peanut butter. Lay a couple of sticks running from the floor to the rim of the bucket (I use some 1x2 about 3 or 4' long). Put a gallon or so of water in the bucket.

Mouse runs up the board, jumps over onto the bottle to get the peanut butter, spins off, fall into the water, and swims for a while. Then gets tired.

I had mice up the shop attic nesting in some junk...they came down to the trap and are gone now.
