I guess women can chime in too. ;-) What kind of lotion are y'all using? I despise the stuff. Can't stand the greasy feeling. However, my shop is cold and I wash my hands all the time with two kids around, so the reality is I need to use it. I'm tired of my knuckles hurting when I reach in my pocket. I'm also tired of bleeding on customer projects.

In the past, I've always just used whatever Jerkins /Suave / Lubriderm my wife had around. I haven't found anything yet that makes a big difference without leaving my hands a slippery work hazard. I figured enough of you guys have been through the same, and maybe know of something out there that actually works for us!

not being gross or smart: plain Raleigh salve, or Vaseline. Seems to rub in clean and disappear, but I don't get carried away with it either. A little dab will do.

I have tried EVERYTHING and in 40 years there is NOTHING that works as well for me as O'Keeffe's!

Whether it's dryness, cracks, chapped, whatever, O'Keeffe's goes on. Had one of those cracks you get on your thumb last week. Two nights of O'Keeffe's, better, three nights, gone!

Straight coconut oil, not coco butter.

X-whatever on corn huskers.

Some other thoughts -
- Don't you have an oil furnace? Consider adding a humidifier, either a whole house deal or just in your shop. Furnaces are notorious for drying out air. I have the same problem every year, this year has been really bad w/ it so cold our furnace is going all the time. A few weeks ago I broke down and turned on the whole house humidifier and the difference in my knuckles is dramatic.
- ware the tough nitrile or polypro-nitrile black gloves while working on the shop stuff. This (a) keeps teh hands cleaner, les swashing, and (b) your hands will sweat more, stay more moist. Yes, less comfy but its the tradeoff against dry dryness or lubed-up greasiness.

Kero turbo heater for now. I'm referring to the new shop, which hovers around 50° on cold nights. Humidifier isn't an option, as our machines rust quick enough when we have warm humid spells. And nitrile gloves don't work too well in a welding shop. If this was my basement, it wouldn't be a big issue, but I've moved out of that. Also, our house is on a heat pump. We're using ultrasonic humidifiers in the rooms sometimes. Seems to help when we keep them full, but still fighting a losing battle. I don't like whole house humidifiers for the mildew issues that can occur in the ductwork.

I agree on corn huskers but it has gotten hard to find around here so I went some kind of mens lotion made by Sauve (I think). It has silicone in it and last pretty good.Gojo kept my hands so dry and cracked that they would catch the covers in bed at night.I got bored one night and peeled the labels off the bottle so I cant tell ya for sure what it is but my wife got it @ wally world.

EDIT-my wife says it was Vaseline brand, not Sauve.

I got some stuff from a friends sister who's a vet that you put on cows udders, my hands dry out and crack once hunting season rolls around

I used Gold Bond Ultimate "men's essentials". I also don't put it on the palm side of my hands, only the backs of them and rub them together. I absolutely can't stand lotion on my hands. If nothing else, I'll use a paper towel or something to wipe it on my hands.

I use the small tubs of GoJo or PermaTex hand cleaner with no pumice in it. I'm not sure what's in that stuff, but it'll get 95% of the grease off my hands the first time and shampoo will get the rest when I take a shower. The no pumice stuff doesn't dry my hands out near as much.

one thing I do when my hands get real bad is right before I go to bed I coat them heavy with lotion then have wife help me put on rubber gloves and sleep in them all night. It sounds bad but keeping ur hands sitting in lotion and letting it soak in is the best thing I've ever done. Two nights of this and all the dryness is gone

Working hands is amazing I can go to sleep literally dripping blood and wake up with no open wounds if not one night always by the second night.

X2 on the black gloves. I always uses gloves in cold months

First you have to repair whatever damage is there.
Copious amounts of Vasilene Intensive Care or Burt Bees stuff ( stinks but works wonders).

Then big bottles of whatever is cheapest at Dollar General and contains cocoa butter.
The cheap stuff usually rubs in and disappears well.

I don't use anything, but my dad has used that Corn Huskers for years.

On this (almost) same subject, what about chapstick? I absolutely HATE having it on, but this time of year there isn't much of a choice.

I hear horse shit works great for chapstick.
Keeps you from licking your lips.

Me too. Burts beeswax, either the traditional in a tin or the stick. A tin will last me years because it works so well. It doesn't take much, and it fixes the damage quickly.

Im glad I seen this thread .
Regular lotions do nothing for me not even the corn huskers and my face and nose gets bad chapped in the winter and yesterday I scraped my knuckles on a soft top zipper causing them to blead all afternoon. Im going to try to find some of the working hands today.
