Why do people call everything west of Asheville (besides Tellico) "No Man's Land"?

I know there's no big official trails or anything out here but it is a beautiful place to wheel. Although there's no designated wheeling spots nearby, there are countless old mountain roads that can be fun to ride and not having to worry about getting in trouble.

I know some people on here from Cullowhee know some spots.

I went to WCU for 5.5 years and rode about anywhere I could get to in a Ranger. I would be living it the mountains if there were better paying jobs. I miss stepping out the door and going trout fishing in 50 yards.

I LOVE WNC.
My territory is straight up 26 and everything west in NC.

The biggest problem with WNC is everyone is looking to get rich, if you can see a hill from their property they think its worth 15k/acre.

Yeah, land is very expensive around here. But you can't beat riding the old logging roads and ancient railroads. The jobs and lack of jobs do suck here.

Has anyone gone up Coppermine before? It's some pretty tough stuff.

Sounds fun. I havent been to Cullowee (sp?) in a while but last I went to UNCA it was a ghost town, not much to do around there but drink and f**k. I went to ASU and I love the Appalachian Mountains! Seems a lot more lucrative there and land is cheaper. Ashville is now called the San Fransisco mountains :shaking:

I went to WCU and i loved it up there. I also loved trout fishing right near my house and wheeling about 10 mins away.

Ill be going back to PA soon. So maybe if I can find a 4x4 before I go I'm going to be doing some scouting as well. My friend and I found some up there already. Too bad I was wheeling my old Lexus. :driver:

Hurricane Creek Rd right off I-40, don't blink or you will miss the "exit".

Wayhutta off of old 107 at the bridge, been a long time since i have been back in there, 1996 at least.. i remember that and Caney Creek

You will get it mad trouble nowadays going up Wayhutta. Cane Creek is probably the best all around "trail" ride that's close to town. You CAN NOT get in trouble for driving up/down Cane Creek. It is indeed an official road... just too difficult for cars to make it up. There are some nice side-trails off of Cane Creek as well. I even found a trail about halfway up off to the right... it forks off after you cross the creek. The right path just leads to a pretty nasty washout and a cool little waterfall. The left path leads up to what I call "Little Slickrock", and beyond that are some pretty crazy gulches and some rock shelves way up the trail.

Caney Fork has some cool trails as well. East Fork is the place I believe where a group of Land Rover guys come annually.

My friend and I have found some cool trails in Blairsville, PA where we're attending school too. It'll be even more fun after I get this 99 Cherokee Friday.
