Need help with a 99 Chrysler Town & Country. Trans wont shift past second; was told ,"output shaft speed sensor". Changed that; now seems to be hung in second. Does have reverse. 183k./3.8 V6. Any ideas?

You must have a scanner to clear the codes out of the tcm. The trans is stuck in limp mode,(2nd gear only). If you don't have a scanner, you can try to disconnect both battery terminals, hold the terminals together and have someone pump the brakes 5-6 times.
You will need a scanner that can read the tcm and the pcm, to clear the codes.

Tried the battery thing, & pumped brakes 10 times. Drove down street, seemed to start in 1st, tried to shift, but goes out of gear, a couple of times, then locks in whatever. Can't tell if its 1st, or 2nd. Turns about 3500 at 40mph. Tried getting up speed, hit neutral, back to D. Will not change. Would computer have to relearn, or restart motor several times?

Hey Transman. On the way to a close shop, today, I noticed, trans, does start in 1st.[after initial start], shifts to 2nd., then hunts for 3rd, but ends up locked in 2nd. Codes are P700 &P733. Mechanic approved the trans fluid, & said I need the selenoid pack. [ mounts on outside of transaxle, beside inner speed sensor] I changed the outer speed sensor, didn't know there was an inner. Selenoid pack sold only at dealer- app.$200.
Do you concure with the above information ? Would hate to blow $200, & be wrong! Thanks for the advice! :stupid:

Only thing was a small ring of grease, about 3/4 way round the probe/tip. Checked with magnet, no metal. Seemed odd place for grease. Are the input & output the same sensor, as in, can I use the old one I took out of the output, for the input. What the chance they're both bad?

^nope different designs and different electical connector. you cant interchange the input/output sensors

O/K Lee. I installed the new inner sensor this morning, drove 1 mile to a shop with scanner. Still had the same codes in it// not sure if the last guy erased them. So I made sure this time. And the old sensor was very Clean. Drove around about 3 miles, stopped once for gas, turned off, & restarted. No change in shift problems. Guess I'm down to the selenoid pack. :poop:

Just 1 more question ?

Transman, hope to be the last time I bother U! Called Skip Dixion, today, per Fordwheelingman. His opinion, if I have a 733 code=3rd gear ratio incorrect; I have a 3rd gear failure. Internal, & has nothing to do with selonoid pack. If this is the case, I will sell as is, or scrape it. Can't recover the cost of a tranny. Any comments, please. Thank You!! :shaking:
