Alright, I'm in need of a new vehicle, I've been dd'in my jeep, and its has almost all it can stand. I've been poking around for two weeks lookin at 3/4 ton and 1 ton 7.3L Fords and Dodges. Looking at drw trucks and srw 4x4 trucks, int the four door variety (which unfortunately knocks out a lot of Dodges), with less than 200k on the clock. I'm leary of anything with an auto trans and more the 200k on it. I've set my spending limit at $12k, as I belive that would be easy for a guy like me with little credit to finance. Something I don't hafta work on outside of normal maintenance, I can just turn the key and go

A ford like I want is out my price range unfortunately, guess folks have figured out the 7.3 is bulletproof.

So, I'm at a compromise, and now I'm down to an '05 dodge 2500 2wd srw longbox 4dr 6spd with 190k, no real fancy frills, and I'm fairly certain I can get the asking price down to $10k or a little less, its been sitting on that lot for a while.

And option two is a '99 ford F250 2wd srw shortbox 4dr auto with 175k, has leather, electric seats, the works. I can probably get the price down to $10k on it as well.

They're both going to be reliable trucks, ive almost sold myself on the dodge, the six speed is talking to me. ;) But, I find the ford to be a better looking truck, and while I don't need the bells and whistles, they sure are nice. The dodge will keep its resale value longer (only due to the 6spd and it being so much newer), and the longbed lends itself to a gooseneck better, but the shortbox ford will be easier to maneuver in everyday driving. I may wind up towing every 2-3 weeks, usually no more than 2hrs in one direction, usually just the jeep, but there's a good probability I'll have a load close to 12k on occasion.

I'm kinda drawn between the two, I'm going to see if I can find anything else when i leave work in the morning, but I have a feeling these are what I'll be coming back to. Anybody have any thoughts or advice on my predicament?

I have friend that has 7.3 ford dually,I think it's 99 not sure but it's clean truck with new terra grapplers...let me know if you want more info or #

I'd lean towards the Dodge. My supervisor has a 2000 F350 SRW 4x4 and after all the small, yet expensive problems he has had....I don't think I could own one. I'm really not impressed with the power his truck makes or the fuel mileage. My old VE Cummins feels way more lively and I average 4.5 mpg better than he does. Plus, you said the Ford is an automatic. I can't stand an automatic here lately.

However, a crew cab long bed is probably close to 25 ft long...but would probably still sell quickly if you wanted to get rid of it. Someone that hauls cars or a camper all the time while traveling would scoop it up real quick.

You didn't mention the colors of the trucks. That'd be another deciding factor for me, just saying!

The color is probably my biggest dislike on the dodge, its white, just plain white. The ford, on the other hand, is a burnt orange color and trimed out in tan on the bottom.

Quad cab long box 3rd Gen Dodge is 22ft tip to tail. Turning circle is about 52' in diameter.

Crew cab short bed 1999 Ford turning circle is about 50' in diameter.

HTH

Gonna bite on the dodge, ford just had too many niknak thongs wrong with it, mostly the interior. Seemed a little short for my tastes to have a gooseneck behind it. It'd sure haul ass though. :flipoff2:

Hate to question the research master...but I thought the 50' was on the 05+ coil trucks?
I thought 99-04 was like 56' and felt like 75' in every parkig lot.

For me if the money is the same 6 years newer is a no brainer...especially since you mentioned the finnce word.

well at least now you wont have to be worried about fixing the jeep to get back home haha....im sure youll be happy with the dodge, i really wish my 7.3 was a 6-speed, but oh well

Could be. That makes a lot more sense, too. I know the coil trucks turn about 5ft tighter than the earlier ones... can't believe that a 20-odd foot truck could have a 45ft turning circle.

Kaboom baby! Very happy with it so far.
