Hey board folks. I have a class A motorhome I tow with. It has an 8.3L cummins mated to an Allison 6 speed auto. Coming home this weekend it had some issues. While running 65 mph, the display on the electronic shifter went out, the speed-o went to 0. Then about a second later, the disply came back on, speed-o went to 65, and the transmission shifted back to 4th gear. That was interesting... Then it went back to 6th. That happened about 10 times in in 3-5 miles. I had it towed to a transmission shop. When I was moving it around the parking lot at the tranny shop, the problem would not happen again...of course. My question: Does anyone know anything about the medium duty allison trannys? If this shop comes back to me and says the repair is going to be a grand, I can't check him. Any help?

My guess without knowing a damn thing about alisons is speed sensor. They should be able to see exactly what it is with a computer hookup. I guess it boils down to if you trust the place you took it to. Could always ask to have them show it to you.

Yea, I figured it was something electrical. I have the equivalent of triple A for motorhomes. They tow it to the nearest repair facility. I don't get to choose unless I agree to pay the difference in towing cost. Thanks though.

I recently worked on an old gmc that had the medium duty allison. Mine just stop pulling all together. Ended up being the torque converter failed. this was a pre electric trans. while doing research I found that the computers and sensors, plus wiring were common failures for the electronic shift transmissions. really don't know the costs but I found a place in raleigh that had a rebuilt transmission w/ torque converter for 1150 dollars. I might can find the source tomorrow at the shop. Let me know if you want to call them.

On that note, what service do you use for the RV 'AAA' I've always wondered how they worked. With an 8.3 im sure its good size. Do you have a link to the site and stuff.. Thanks

Nothing to add on original topic, but I insured my RV through Progressive (since Allstate doesn't :shaking:) and it includes road side service and towing and was very very affordable for my older RV.
Sorry to hear about you luck heading home from Harlan. I was in the "small" RV camped behind you.

Thanks man. I will let you know if my repair heads south.

I have a roadside emergency assistance through Good Sam. It's 24 hr and covers towing, stuck, lockout, fuel, tire changes, etc... www.goodsamers.com

I am insured with progressive as well. I am going to check into my policy. If it covers towing and such, I am double covered and double paying:lol:

At least on the HDT's I've been researching, simply pulling the connectors off and cleaning them seems to fix a lot of the issues, but otherwise, I'm with Mike on the speed sensor.

For protection, I had both the AAA RV+ coverage and the Good Sam's coverage. Now I have something that came with my Nationwide insurance policy very cheaply.. If you have just regular towing coverage, they will cover the tow rig, NOT the trailer too. RV coverage takes care of the whole combo. I don't feel like leaving my buggy on the side of I-80...

Benji, on the output housing on the trans, there's a speed senser, loosen the locknut and GENTLY screw the senser in till it touches bottom while counting how many turns. could be only a 1/2 turn or 3/4 turn. now unscrew it completely and there will be a window on the end ofit, wipe it clean and reinstall te the same depth as origanally installed and reconnect wires with dielectric grease and call me after the test drive! 99% of the time this will take of the problem. This fixed my Eagle Coach.

PS when you have a few days to spend on preventive maintanance, unplug every connection and harness you can get to from the headlights to tailights one at a time and use dielectric on every one, and I mean from the roof airs to the refridgerater! Took me 3 days on mine. I do this when I trade and it is worth every minute!

Coach care is one we do service for...there are 4 or 5, I can get names on, but coach care actually pays the shops, and they require you to have waiting areas, with cable tv and food/beverage available free....

Thanks guys. Terry, I will definitely look into that. I can't tell you you how many times I have fixe corroded electrical connections! Thanks for the info. I would have called you on that sunday night. But, at midnight, I didn't think you would be too happy with me!

Benjie, call me ANYTIME if you are brokedown, need assistance or whatever. Don't hesitate. Friends for awhile, Terry & Belinda.

Thanks Terry. That's why I didn't call you. I know you would come to the rescue at 1:00 in the morning. I didn't want to treat a good friend that way!!!!

To close this thread, it was the transmission computer that took a poop. That was the most expensive external part I could replace... Merry Christmas to me, I got a transmission computer.
