I should be in the towing business.

When i was in a head on accident 3 miles from the house. ( not at fault and walked away ) They charged me 395 dollars to tow it to my house and not their yard which was further away and would of been kept outside. Their insurance ended up paying me back but you are right i need to change my job.

Dang! Maybe I should just buy a flat bed for a tow rig, then I could make money on the side with it.

My cousin was in a wreck at the end of my road. Less than a quarter mile from my house. Wrecker was getting ready to hook up when I asked the cost. It was around $300. I asked how much to tow it to my house. About the same. We sent them away and I dragged it out of the road myself. I could tell they were pissed. There was something like a $175 emergency call fee for coming to the scene of an accident. The guy was nice enough explaining why he charged so much, but i couldn't justify the cost. Being able to choose the service and being able to wait on it will cut your cost considerably!

My former Company also ran flatbeds, & lowboys. As I recall there was usually an empty rate & loaded rate. $6.00 per mile was one of the rates, I believe, & the weight didn't matter, up to 40K.

But really, you are talking about it's costing them $.80 a mile for gas (5mpg@4.00/gal) plus the drivers wage, plus truck charge. If it takes them 15 min to get there then 10 min to hook up, then 40 min drive to Siler City, 10 min to unload, almost 1hr to get back to the shop. So they are paying for ~75 miles of fuel ($60 in fuel) plus 2.25 hr wage for the driver (15/hr maybe so 33.75) and let's not forget they didn't get the truck for free so let's figure a $40 truck charge. Now they have to have something to pay for overhead and also a profit margin. So you're looking at $133.75 in just labor and fuel, not counting what they need to make to be profitable. A lot of people think that places can do stuff for next to nothing. Sure if your buddy owned a roll back he could do it for the price of fuel but he doesn't have employees or a business to run.

When I rear ended a lady on 40 I knew I was lucky when the trooper allowed me to leave and go borrow a truck and trailer to haul it off. Did not want to pay that tow bill.

fwiw, I was towed from Deep River Road on #1 north to Wake Forrest for $450 after my wreck on Labor Day. Took a rollback and a wrecker to get both my truck and Jeep towed. Always call your own wrecker if you have a preference, don't let the LEO call otherwise you get whoever is in the rotation. I know I was blessed with such a reasonable rate based who actually called Dean's, thanks again Lee.

I've been towed 3 times in the last 4 years. Around $60 each time....from 3 to 25 miles one-way. Car Pros in Sanford if you need it down in this area. All 3 were either disabled or wrecked and had to be winched on the flatbed.

Last time I did a long-distance tow was back in '98 or 99...I think it was 1.85 per loaded mile. Of course, gas was a couple bucks less then.

My old apartment had one of my old jeeps towed because it had a flat tire during a "property inspection from corporate"
Unfortunately at the time I was doing a very small jail sentance for some drunken dumbassery. When I got out and home, 3 days later, I was told I had to go pay the tow bill and pick it up.
It was right under $500 to tow it 6 miles to their yard, and store it for 3 days.

I flipped my jeep and had no choice in the matter.

As the trooper did as he pleased.

You have the right to request a specific tow company, unless you were unconscious.

Just 30 minutes out from Sevierville, TN and the trans on my wifes Honda mini-van vacates the premises.
We call AAA. We have AAA Gold.
For various reasons ..... "Take us home!".
Good thing about a AAA, they had to. No option.
199 miles, $800.00 bill ($4.00 a mile), we paid $396.00.
AAA GOLD pays 100 miles, we paid 99.
Next level up of AAA we would have paid nothing.
But With AAA, we've had 2-3 other tows and 4 lock-outs ( thanks wife!) at no charge.

GET AAA!

I would have gabbed an extra battery and slipped the belt off and tried to drive it home.I know those trucks are'nt cheap and cost alot to operate but thats a little excessive.

AAA guys....

Google searched a NC discount and paid $65/year for 4 100 mile tows, 1 of them being a max of 200 miles. I've used 3 tows this year with my Jeep and for a few friends. Won't ever get raped from towing companies ever again.

Were you still on the scene when he called the wrecker? If you broke your hip I would imagine that you were gone to the hospital before he got to the wreck scene. In that case how was he supposed to know who you wanted to tow it? He would have then just called a rotation wrecker to pick it up. Did you expect him to just leave it upside down on the side of the road until you came back to get it? Then when half of your shit was gone it would be the Troopers fault, right?

We used to have AAA but they banned us for a few years. We used to abuse the hell out of it.

More than one occasion after 100 miles we just had them pull over and drop it off, then went and got it with our truck and trailer.

We used all 4 tows 3-4 years in a row.

I was in the ambulance , and never was asked, trooper came and talked to.me twice in the ambulance on scene. Damn john Lennon imagined but didn't get him far either

My money says your a L E O nctaco ?
