Alternatives to Time Warner

Buy a FIRE TV STICK and install Kodi on it (or buy one off ebay with Kodi already on it). Use an antenna for locals. Don't look back.

You're on your own for internet, which you must have for the Fire TV Stick.
Yep what he said sling tv is an option also but i dont really see the value being worth it

I have Amazon Fire stick. And sling tv. Sling has more package options than when I first got it. Lots of good options. I love it! And with sling there is no contract. We have twc for Internet and it works great.

Can you pick up local channels like CBS on Sling or that is what the antenna is for? And when you guys say Antenna? is it really a box or actual antenna? I also need everything to be HD. I have spent way too much time and money setting up all my TV's to look good to go back to watching standard :)

Also, I have a TV in our bedroom that is currently hooked up to a box through TWC that just gives us basic cable. What will I need to do for that? An additional antenna?

If I already have a smart TV do I need to buy the fire stick to download Sling?

Google HDTV antenna. I have a Mohu Leaf 60 on both of our TVs. Bluray player in the bedroom has Netflix and amazon prime video. We have a Roku in the living room. I DO NOT miss having cable. Id say 30% of the time, we are just watching over the air TV. 30% is my daughter watching one of her shows on Netflix. The other 40% is either streaming blues rock on Pandora or my wife binge watching TWD.

There's nothing special about the antenna. Figure out where your signals come from, then put one up in the attic pointed in the direction of each major transmitter. Here in Raleigh, that means pointing one toward Chapel Hill for UNC, and pointing the other toward Clayton for all the networks. Run the feed from each antenna backwards through a splitter (to make one line out of two), run that through an adjustable gain amp, then run lines out to all of your TVs. Easy Peasy.

The over the air channels (through an antenna) are HD. My major networks come in more clear than others with TWC, and I live near the airport.

As stated before, its just an antenna that is mounted in the attic. Its super simple to hook up, especially if you had traditional cable already wired in your house.

I was just gonna do an indoor antenna and upgrade the coax cable to an RG-6. I am really trying to keep everything hidden and no wires shown if possible. I have added an additional outlet behind my mounted TV to help this.

Also, someone please explain Kodi to me. Cost involved, step by step guide on how to install, what all does it offer?

I'd start with one of the websites that shows you how far the transmitters are and then buy one rated for that range. An indoor may be fine, it may not.
The nice thing about one in the attic that you run into the existing cable is you have no ugly antenna in your house or on your roof.

I think I have made up my mind. I am going to try and find a place that has a Fire stick in stock and go pick one up tonight, set it up and get the 7 day free trial from sling and try it out for a week and see how we do with no cable. If all goes well, then I will call TWC to cut my cable.

Get just internet through TWC.
Here we have Comcast, we got the middle-tier service and it's only $39.99 month. Since there's no TV or phone it's literally just that, no taxes.
We use SlingTV, it's $20 for the basic package. For $5 more you can add a sport package, or they have others for entertainment channels etc. Worth it. Again - no extra fees, just $20.
Then get an antenna for network TV.
OR.... if you have a Roku, you can get the USTVNow app for FREE, then use that to stream all the major networks for FREE. USTVNow is free for the main networks - it's intended for US civilians who are overseas but you can watch it from domestic IPs too.

Also - buy your own cable modem, don't rent it from TWC. They aren't too expensive and it'll pay for itself in < 6 months.
When we cut the cord we went from ~160/month to $60/month.

the only time I have missed it was during the Olympics when I couldn't get NBCSN, and even then I should have just paid the $5 to add the sports package to Sling for 1 month.

What kind of download speeds is everyone running? I'm looking to do the same thing and TWC offers a number of different internet plans with varying up/download speeds. Just curious as to what'd recommended for streaming on a couple of TVs and surfing on a couple of iPads.

Think of kodi as the napster of tv youtube it and you can set it up yourself from your tv in about 10 min. Very easy then find out what media sever you want to stream from like exodus pheonix 1 channel saltz

The Fire TV Stick is $40 and you can google how to install Kodi on it yourself, it's pretty straight-forward and simple, or you can buy one with it already loaded for $60-$80. @karatejosh put it nicely, the napster of tv.

Kodi allows you to watch movies, television shows, live tv, etc. There's plenty of youtube videos that will tell you all about it. Solo Man posts some good ones.

So bought a Fire stick and downloaded Sling TV and I gotta say, I really like it! I am able to stream the channels I already watch live and picture quality seems to be better than on TWC. Installed Kodi this morning and will mess around with it later tonight. Is there a certain media server that is better to use for movies? which one has the most up to date movies?

I use salts

I mostly use Exodus. Occasionally they'll go down, so play around with several of them. Exodus, Salts, and Velocity seem to be the most popular.

I just figured out that Kodi was formerly known as XBox Media Center.

As much as things change... :shaking:
