Am I being a Dumbass?

Quit being a puss and cantilever that shit out the back and flip off any haters. Just drill some holes down in your frame and anchor it there with some massive straps. Praise dale raise hell.

Sorry. I am out drinking. Rock on.

Why not slap an axle under the rear, a tow bar to the front and a set of tow lights to the chassis?

No muss, no fuss, no trailer rental and an empty bed both ways to move some stuff for others and puck up some gas money.

I rebuilt one of those hitch hauler things a month or two ago. It was store bought, made of tin foil. I rebuilt it with .250 wall and put a kink in it so it wouldn't drag the ground.

7 days straight with you the only one behind the wheel? Gonna suuuck. I did 1400 miles solo a few months ago. Took 48 hours with naps and such. CA is a solid 4 days away if you don't have a helper.

Also, should have bought a full size truck. :flipoff2:

IRS mileage is .58/mi, btw...

Mine is 100% home made. I used 1/8” 2x2 tubing, 6 feet long. Ran all the wires internal and just plug it into my 4 prong outlet.

No driver helper. I’ve driven to Colorado solo about 2 years ago. I enjoy the road and the scenery.

No comment on the “real truck”. If I buy a bigger truck, I’d have to buy a smaller trailer.

I left OK city OK and didn't stop until I got home, that was a long miserable trip. That stretch from Memphis to Nashville SUUUUUCCCKKKSSSS!!!! I've done 1000-ish miles in one day a few times.

Been scheming this since before Christmas. Far from last minute. Which part is “janky”? How could you make my setup better?

If I save the extra $850, that’ll buy chromoly axle shafts for my Dana 60.

To me, the janky part is not doing this with a trailer. Hopefully your luck is better than mine.

As for $850...across a $20-30k build (I assume), that’s peanuts...maybe I’m giving this build more credit than you’re planning. Typically if a budget is so tight that $850 is going to make it or break it, it’ll be a longer term build, and usually pretty easy to scrape up the cash over a year or two.

But like I said, as an excuse for a road trip, go for it.

Those are two things I don’t already own. It’ll cost more money.

You’re spot on with my buggy budget and I have a trailer available. I’m trying to use just my truck for convenience and mpg’s.

I hear they have great brownies there.

Seen em, never tried any. Every resident is allowed to have 2 plants for personal use. They’re growing in yards like decorations.

Dude,borrow a trailer.

I’ve got plenty of trailers sitting around the family farm. I think it’s overkill for just a tube chassis.

I'm with @UTfball68

If it can go wrong, it will. Even if it stays together and you make it home ok, you'll probably get pulled over at some point. I visualize seeing this thing in my rear view mirror sliding out and onto the highway. No thanks!

If I were doing a cross country trip, it'd be on a trailer for certain. Not worth the risk to other folks on the road.

If you were going across town on the back roads, different story.

Honestly, there isn't much of I40 between Raleigh and Memphis that doesn't suck.

I did Oglalla NE to just shy of Louisville on one Saturday, slept in the passenger seat, then went Louisville to Princeton, WV on Sunday morning. Made it in time for dinner.

Also did Ft Lauderdale to Cape Canaveral, watched a shuttle launch, back to Ft Lauderdale, then to Raleigh in a day... But @trailhugger and I took turns.

There's no part of a 1000 mi day that doesn't suck, though. Especially if you get stuck in St. Louis traffic at hour 8...

I’m using legitimate ratchet straps from Mac’s and axle wraps around the tubes. The same setup I’ve used to haul my crawler on my trailer. Do you not think the tie down points in the truck are up to snuff? What scenario do you see this thing coming off the back of the truck? Would that same scenario not result in it coming off the trailer as well?

I'd do a out west and back in a heartbeat personally. But $1850 is a legit good deal too.

I ship a ton of stuff full TT and also LTL. Call places like Freightquote, Freightcenter and PLS Logistics. Hell, call John with King of Freight, tell him sent ya and if he wants more of my business, to help a good buddy of mine out.

As far as the home made extension goes, assuming it's constructed well (I'm sure it is), add some dunnage where it needs to be and rock out.

I went to VA Beach VA and back, roughly (960 miles rt) in the same day 3-4 times by myself.Leave around 7 a.m,be back by midnight. We left OK w the intensions of spending the night in Memphis.Got to Memphis and still felt good so we rolled on.Tonya drives on trips, can pull any trailer we have and does a good job,I just cant get comfortable enuf to sleep and cant read while riding so I might as well drive. We're heading to Lancaster PA in March for a week,we'll see how the new truck pulls.

And to add if they are delivering to a residential address it will be more $$$.Commercial addresses are always cheaper.

I think he means fully welded or tacked together? That rig looks like it has been wheeled, not in the process of being built. I've had tack welds break on stuff during transit. Lost a nose clip once when the welds broke. It was on a local trip.

I would build a rectangular metal support frame out of 2x2 steel (about the size of the plywood) and make some tabs to utilize the bolts holding the bed to the frame. Strap the chassis to that and head on down the road. The plywood isn't going to offer any rigidity to your canoe rack but some metal will.

I visualize the belly sitting in the plywood- am I wrong? I don't think that it will sit on the pallets, as they look to be too far toward the cab of your truck. Never would I trust the plywood to hold it.

OR--- get a larger trailer, strap this chassis to it and get the one Will Carter wants and charge him $1800 to deliver. Win/win
