what kind of problems will i run into swapping a 360 from a 77 waggy into a 88 yj. plan to use the 999 trans and 231 that is in the yj. i have read that input shaft on trans are diffrent lenths on some models.

The v8 swap is pretty straight forward. Get some AA conversion motor mounts and good to go. Run a 3 row radiator ( I have one for sale :D ) . The wiring can be spliced in to use you stock gauges. When It comes to the 999 I can't help. Just beware as I think the 88 YJ has a 21 spline t case.

yea the trans is the question, don't know if it will last or not.i don't think the 360 has much more power than the i6 so mabey. i have a th350 but don't want to start buying adapters. the 231 is 23 spline so should be good there.

I did that same swap back in 2003. Removed 258, cut off motor mounts, fabbed new ones and bolted an AMC 360 to my TF999.
The wiring is easy as much of it will swap over. The fuel pumps are on different sides and you'll have an issue with the power steering pressure hose as the pre 80 ones are flared where the 80 and newer are o-ringed. Just run a 80 and newer reservoir and call it done.
Easy, easy swap.

The A999 is very weak due the size of the frictions and steels inside it, find the 727 with a 300, then start looking for new axles.

My thoughts on this,
I run a AMC 360 in my rig. And it is a rowdy one.
TF 727 trans/d300 4.1 Jb kit.
This combo has been beat to to death and never failed.
Driver error was the only problem i encountered.
My opinion only.

Think I'm going to stick to the plan to use what I have, if the 999 don't hold up then I'll swap it, as far as axles, I've been beating on 44's for 7 years now with out any problems, that 360 don't have much more power than the 4.2

999's are great transmissions. Mine handled a very healthy injected AMC 360 for years and years just fine. They are a little narrower than a 727 which can be a benefit when packaging a front driveshaft and exhaust in a YJ frame.

I did a 318 swap in a YJ years ago. Magnum is the way to go if you're dead set on a Mopar engine. If you want power you can go with an LS. Even though ive done it, I still sway people from doing an LS swap. Primary reason is, you won't find parts in a junkyard. And its $$$$. At least the magnum/Mopar v8s are in practically every junkyard you'll ever walk into.

Exactly the problem I ran into with my 727/300. Tcase was clocked flat and with the width of the trans pan I could barely fit a 1 1/2" diameter driveshaft by it.
