AMC 360 won't run

has the engine had a backfire through the carb?

I had similar problem on my cj with a 6CYL.The float was way off and it was flooding the carb.Gas out top, middle and bottom.I rebuilt the carb for 20$ and it still would'nt crank till timing was near exact and I changed out the fouled set of plugs.123&4 plug were just black and 5,6 were wet. After new plugs fired right up.Good luck.

I rebuilt the carb and it is getting fuel. I cleaned the plugs as they were fowled again. I reset the base timing wiht advance this time. It started a little and shuts off again.

Jets are 66. I set the floats according to the instructions, turn the bowl upside down and adjust them to they are parallel to the copver top.

I know you said you set the timing to TDC. Did you adjust it any after? I believe it's supposed to be 6 degrees BTDC.

Well I don’t feel so bad now. I worked on the Jeep all week last week and my last thought was something electrical is wrong with it, maybe the coil, etc. Monday morning I decided to take it to the local garage and have them take a look at it. I told them that I thought it may be the coil or a short. It appeared to me as though it was getting enough spark to start but no stay running.

The shop has had it for 3 days now without figuring out what is wrong. Yesterday I ran down a new coil for them to test. Finally today they started shooting the wires and the voltage is wrong or non-existent sometimes. They think it is a short in the harness. They are now taking the harness apart to find out where.
