Newly rebuilt 401 10 psi oil pressure @ idle, increase rpm and oil pressure drops to nothing. Initally primed oil pump with drill and shaft before starting motor got 60-70 PSI.
1.Changed to mechanical gauge...same thing
2.Removed dist. and inspected oil pump shaft (looks fine)
3.Tried to prime with drill and only 15psi.
4. Removed oil pan and checked pick up tube (looks fine)

Have not removed oil pump yet, any suggestions for things to check, with oil pump or bypass springs or otherwise?

I have the same issues with my grand wagoneer. Haven't really spend any time on it, but some of the things that I have found on the net for it is that it has something to do with the timing cover and it being wore down (atleast thats what I think in my case. My motor is far from a rebuild.) Here's a link to what I found that is suppose to fix the issue.

And another detailing all the issues it could be.

Thanks for the response guys, pulled the front timing chain cover to inspect for wear. The cover looks good, clearances checks out. Possible blown gasket @ oil galley on alum. front cover. Will try replacing gasket and if same will support bulltear and invest in new cover and oil pump kit:shaking:

check that the oil pick up is at least 1/4" off the bottom of the oil pan. Typically we will weld a nut to the bottom of the pick up to prevent it being sucked to the bottom of the oil pan.

I checked, but thanks. What is weird is that it had 60psi when primed with a drill before it was started. Then after start up it dropped to 10psi and lower when reved up.I 'm getting ready to put it back together again and if same issues I'll start looking elsewhere.
