Birthday weekend for my boy so we took him and a friend to the American Tank Museum in Danville, VA.
Their website is so-so, so we didn't really know what to expect, bust or blast. Holy Cow it was AWESOME!
If you like history, it is packed full of artifacts, guns, uniforms, military vehicles, and a LOT of tanks!
Bill Gasser is the owner and he is cool as hell and chocked so full of interesting info and stories.
Plan for 4 hours minimum to walk through it. You will not regret it.
It's totally worth a day or weekend trip with or without kids.
I will post pics as I sort through them.

I always see the sign for it on 360 and keep telling myself I'd like to check it out one day, but have never gotten around to it.
looking forward to seeing some pics.

I work at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in MD.
Up until last year we had one of the largest Ordinance museums in the country here on posts... hundreds of tanks lined up in a field just past the entrance.
Things going all the way back to turn of the century. Was pretty cool cool driving by it every day.
Thanks to BRAC they dissolved it and moved elsewhere.

You should go to their yearly open house, it's a blast. They ran over an old Cadillac with an M-60, demonstrated a flamethrower and various machine guns. My kids loved it! There were a bunch of folks in Star Trek uniforms???????? Not sure what that was all about, nor do I think they had anything to do with the muesum.

How old was the birthday boy? I've got 8 and 9 year old kids, wondering if they'd enjoy it. We've drove by a few times, they seemed a little interested...dunno how excited they would be after 4 or more hours though.

Birthday boy is 17 today but loves military stuff. Age does not matter though. We saw young guys and old guys, all were having a great time.
You can do it quicker than 4 hours because there's a lot of smaller stuff at the beginning that you can bypass.
