One of our Jeeps doesn't have a radio. It also doesn't have a spot where a radio might go.

What options are out there for a 12 volt amp that will take a line-in (from a phone) and drive four 4-ohm speakers? If it's compact and has a small control panel (volume/on/off), that would be ideal. Whatever it is, I'm going to want to bury it in the dash.

Im a fan of secret audio's stuff.
Works good in the hot rod.

Wont blow your ears out but you can hear it. And it can mount anywhere

Woodys custom shop on ebay has a couple lower buck options that are very small "hot rod" hidden amps that will take aux, usb, SD cards etc. I have used a couple of the different ones (has 2 speaker and 4 speaker options, blue tooth options). Not the quality of secret audio, but also half the cost.

Hmm... a DIN head unit is still cheaper. :(

Amazon.com: Pyle PLMRMP3A 4-Channel Waterproof MP3/iPod Marine Power Amplifier: Car Electronics

Not sure exactly what your after; but I have used a few of these on various boats with good luck. From your post this should fit the bill. Its basically an Amp with similar power to a low end head unit but without any tuner. It allows for an auxiliary input cord and has a gain/volume knob.

X2. Have used these in a few rigs to run wakeboard speakers. They arent the greatest in volume or sounds quality but work well.

Something like this one and get bluetooth also:
Amazon.com: Pyle PLMRMBT7B Marine Grade 1200W Amp Bluetooth 4-Channel Amplifier (Black): Car Electronics

Amazon.com: Pyle PLMRA410BT Elite Series Waterproof Bluetooth Amplifier (400 Watt 4-Channel Marine Amp): Car Electronics

^^ I like that. Very similar to what I'm looking for in Steampunk.

I digress, Amazon tells me that it WILL fit my 04 Ford Superduty. I don't own one of those.

That one looks almost perfect. Little control head that can get mounted on the dash someplace, and the rest of it can get buried.

Now... moving the goalposts a bit... has anybody seen one that has input priority? For example... it's got a line-in on the RCAs and listening to music on Bluetooth... if it gets a signal on the line-in, it switches inputs temporarily, then switches back.

What have you got against a head unit? Any 4-channel amp will do the job. Pick one up off a crackhead, hook up your phone through an inline volume control, and you're set. If you want to save a little hassle, get a Pioneer from Best Buy. I just hooked up their low-end deck in Dad's truck. $79, CD player, fantastic bluetooth connectivity, USB, aux-in, tuner for your AM talk radio, clock, and great sound for his 15 year old speakers. I've played with a lot of the Chinese T-amps and small "motorcycle amps," and they all leave something on the table compared to a standard head unit.

Don't buy some crappy Pyle.

Bluetooth Car Amplifiers - Crutchfield

The Kenwood would be my choice.

I don't think you're going to find a unit with automatic source priority. You would likely need some other type of signal processor for that with some select-able/programmable intelligence. An automatic signal mux (multiplexer) is not something most people need for car audio...

The reviews on the Pyle suggest that it's a pile.

Yes, and this makes me sad.

This is pretty common in intercom controllers with 2-way radio connections. But I'm not spending that sort of money, and you can only pull off a headset in a fire truck, a sand rail, and an airplane. If you're riding around in a Barbie Jeep with a headset on, you're gonna look like a DB.

Step 1 wear headset
Step 2 Cover with full face helmet, preferrably with chrome flames on side
Step 3 profit

If I had a full-face helmet, I'd just wire it with earpieces and a mic.

One of these showed up in the mail today:
Amazon.com: Uniden Communications Speaker (BC15): Cell Phones & Accessories

It's plenty loud enough to work as an external speaker for the 2-way radio, so hearing the person on the other end shouldn't be a problem anymore. That also fixes the problem of wanting to mix several inputs. Cool as it might be to have the music give priority to the 2-way radio, simple is better.

This is the amp I have in my k10, but I only have smaller speakers; 2 3.5 kickers and 2 4x6 kickers. It's not super loud, but it's cheap and takes an aux cord, which is what I was looking for. I don't plan on upgrading.
