Im working on setting up a HP D44 using a homemade case spreader. i've read through billavista's gear article half dozen times now and cant find anywhere that he mentions loosening the spreader once the carrier is in place to get a true indication on the gear marking compound. using it last night, i checked the pattern in 3 places with the spreader on tight, then checked the pattern again in 2 other places with the spreader loose and it appeared that the pattern moved towards the Toe. does that seem right?
also, i seem to be getting a much clearer pattern on the Drive side (reverse cut gears). there is a pattern on the Coast side but its not as distinct. any thoughts?

I have done literally thousands of gear set ups.
That being said, I do not see how you can try to evaluate a pattern with a case spreader installed. The spreader should be used to install the carrier, (if you have to, I have never had to use a spreader unless its an IFS diff with 1 main and the housing as the other main) then removed, the pattern checked, and go from there.

Shoot a pic or two of the pattern with the final shim thicknesses installed and we'll help ya out.

I have a question about gear setups on D44s myself, I got 2 D44s F/R. Front is from a 66 Bronco with 3.55s and the rear is from a 95 Rodeo with 4.10s! my question is will any gear setup for a D44 work or is there a certain kind that I need to get for each? I am pretty new to the axle game but very enthused to learn about it. Also I am going to have to get a larger carrier for the front if I plan on going to 4.56s right?

If there is a vendor that has prices on everything I need please feel free to PM me prices on setups available for my D44s, I would greatly appreciate it!!

THANKS GUYS :driver:

back on subject...
apparently the spreader will cause a false pattern, just for future reference. ok, heres where I am: I cant seem to get rid of the sharp edge at the root of the tooth. Im reading .007 backlash right now. does this pattern look "diffuse" enough? any suggestions to get rid of the sharp edge?
i know the pics arent real clear. my camera takes crappy close-up pics

Pinion is too close. Take .010" out from behind the pinion and see how it looks.

Took .010 out per jeepinmatt's suggestion and pattern is alot more centered.
i think when i pressed the new carrier bearings on (was using the old ones as setup) the backlash went from .006/.007 to .009/.010 but i think i can live with that, still within range but not as tight as i'd like. thanks for the input.
