Another freaking trailer tire thread...

I'm looking at getting 5 new trailer tires. Currently I run 205/75/D15 6ply.

Researching, I know I can run the radial in that size but will 225/75/R15 work better? I think I have read I can run the larger tire size and get better longevity of the tires.

Options are 205/75/R15 6 or 8 ply or go with a 225/75/R15 6 or 8 ply. What the best bang for the buck?

Questions are, can I really run that tire size and who has the best prices? I can find both sizes on Ebay and Amazon for dirt cheap but they are brands I have never heard of.

I found one set for super cheap but they have a speed rating of J. (J=62mph) Not that I'm a speed demon but on a flat roads I cruise around 70mph.

I'm towing a 7k trailer that is close to being maxed out when loaded up.

What say NC4X4?
 
I run maxxis 205/75/15 D on my trailer. Great tires for that size. Recently completed a trip to Colorado and back with the cruise sometimes set at 85mph towing an overloaded trailer with no issues. Tires have over 15k on them and are wearing great.
 
Maxxis for sure like Josh said. There are more options when you get into 16" trailer tires but for 15", Maxxis is a solid choice
 
Maxxis m8008 here on my 3500 lb axles with 15 inch. For the lighter trailer tires I think they are very good. About 100 a piece if I recall correctly.
 
Any dealers on here that can get these trailer tires for a good price? Cheapest I'm seeing is 106 for the 8ply (free shipping) or 90+shipping.
 
What guys are doing by using a larger tire, is getting more load rating. You can do the same with a higher rating, like 8-10 ply. You can do both, like bigger tire & 6 ply, maybe save a few bucks, & ride smoother.
I don't believe in Maxing out the load rating. That's a Good way to have tire failure!
 
I'll check my trailer and see what I just got. 15" rim 8 or 10 ply, I honestly can't remember. I about max my 7k trailer out so i wanted a beefier tire.

Be forewarned that if you go to a larger tire it will run closer to the wheel well of the trailer fender and may rub the sidewall into the fender. This could cause it to fail. Don't ask me how I know.
 
Call Marion tire here in Marion. They typically have the best prices.

My rims are 15x5 (5x4.5) rated for 1820lbs.

If I go with a stronger tire (8ply vs. 6ply) will my current rim be able to take a higher pressure?

Because a typical 6 ply is 1820lbs @ 50psi and 8 ply 2150lbs @ 65psi.

Would I then HAVE to get 15x6 rim? The 15x6 rims are rated for 2050 pounds at 75psi.

I don't want to get new rims unless...someone needs some used trailer tires and wheels...

I'm guessing I should stick with the 6ply tire based on my rim.

I was in this same predicament recently and considered upsizing to the 225's too. From what I remember reading, my rims are too narrow. Look up what the minimum rim width is for the 225. I ended up buying 205's in the 8 ply flavor from Colfax Trailer. They were $100/ea.

Byron I'm headed by the shop where my trailer is shortly. I'll check and see what I got.

Yep minimum wheel width is 6 inches for the 225/75/15 Per eTrailer " I would not recommend installing a 225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, on a rim width of 5.5 inches or smaller. The minimum rim width for that size tire is 6 inches. If you try to squeeze that size tire on a narrower wheel than what is recommended, it will cause the tread of the tire to not lay flat, will wear like an overinflated tire, and it may not seat on the rim properly."

Sounds liget to me.

Cool. I found some Maxxis M8008 Tires - ST205/75R15 6ply tire on Ebay 91+ free shipping.

I use the same guy and highly recommend him. Best I remember my d load radials were $100 each mounted and balanced.
 
Just to muddy the waters. I've had great life out of my goodyear marathons. Tires on my boat trailer are 7+ years old with no cracking or dry rot.

They do not come in D for 205's just C. But 225's come in C&D. 90ish on tirerack
