Antique Vehicle Inspection?

I am fairly new to NC. I have a 79 Camaro I am trying to transfer the title from VA to NC. I went to the local DMV and submitted the application to title the car. NC sent me a letter in the mail saying I had to have an inspector from DMV come out to the house and look at the car before they would issue a title (because it is over 30 years old). I'm not trying to register the car as it isn't in running conditions. Why does the state need to look at it? Does anyone know what the inspector is looking for? I really don't have time to dick with repairing this car right now to satisfy an inspector. Again, not looking to operate it on public roads. I plan to call DMV and talk to someone about it, would like to have some knowledge before I do though. I tried searching their site and couldn't find much. Thanks all.

Had to do this with a 50s era car and I only got the title transferred, I wasn't registering it for the road either. As stated above they are looking at vin and checking to make sure it isn't stolen. The one in Forsyth County will let you trailer a car to them as well vs coming to your home. They were very nice to work with.

Sc does the same. To make sure the vehicle is physically in the state. Some folks will title vehicles in neighboring states to avoid or lessen property taxes so they want to see the vehicle physically in the state

Ohhh ok. I can work with that. I was getting bent out of shape thinking they wanted to do a safety inspection on the car. Guess I'll call them up this week and sort that. Thanks all.

I did this with a '60's car I bought in VA recently...painless, quick, & easy.

Actually trailered it to the DMV "station"...5-minutes & done. Drove from there to the local license plate agency...home by 10 am.

I went through this with my Merc. Had an original title from the seller but because the car had extensive changes to it I had to get a bond on the car and they re-VIN’d my car which pissed me off. In my case it took a year and a half to get the title. The story I was told is this process was brought about because our law makes were titling Kit cobras as real cars. Basically if your car is over 30 years old and does not have an NC title they verify your numbers to make sure nothing comes up stolen and you are on your way.

I also went through this with my 86 scrambler. The DMV says there is no such thing so back to the Trooper office I go. Took 2 hours to convince them that they made 123 86 scramblers and I didn’t forget the vin plates.

Good times..... can’t wait to see the length of the glove they whip out when I go for a title for my 23 t-bucket project!

I've had to do this 3 times now - as everyone has said it's supper easy. Don't sweat it.
