I bought an antique vehicle (1957) without a title. Does anyone know the process for getting this registered in my name in North Carolina? I have a receipt and bill of sale.

Call your local DMV license and theft bureau office. Note this is usually NOT the license plate agency where you get your tags. Sometimes they're in the same building but not always. Ask to speak to an inspector, they're usually only in the office taking calls for a certain time period, in Fayetteville it's usually between 10:00-1:00 or so.

The inspector can walk you through the process, he's going to have to come out and check for all the known vin locations, then run those numbers.

My uncle just went through this for a barn find 1950 Chevy sedan. He's about three months into the process, he had to get a bond, the DMV said it was not stolen, etc. They gave him a temporary provisional title, he now has to make it run and street worthy (basically pass an inspection). Once it's ready, the DMV inspector will come back out to his house and inspect it for streetability, and give him a new vin number from nc along with the actual title so he can go register it.

Awesome, thanks Tim.

your insurance agent can walk you through a bonded title process too, as they have to start the paperwork. make sure that your VIN tags (all of them) are not molested in any way. they REALLY don't like that.
