I may be able to go on my first black bear hunt this year. Any of you guys hunt black bears? If so, what caliber rifle and grain bullet do you use?

So not hunting with dogs, will be in a tree stand like deer hunting.

I am thinking of using my .30-06 with a 220 grain round.

.300 weatherby or .338 Winchester magnum in a 260-275 grain will handle any large game in North America. 7mm, 270, 30.06, 30/30, 12 gauge with 3” magnum slugs will do the job also depending on style and location of the hunt. My gun of choice in the mountains is a 35 Whelen with 225-280 grain ammo.

Any deer rifle you have on hand and feel confident shooting will do the job. possibly pick up some heavier grain bullets and see how they shoot. Biggest thing is to learn the anatomy of a black bear. their fur is pretty long so it can make their body appear bigger but the vital areas are pretty small compared to a deer.

if i was hunting from a stand i would be using my 30-06
if i was hunting with dogs it would be a 45/70 with iron sites

I hunted bear with dogs for a long time, quit though. Caliber doesn’t much matter just use good ammunition something that will hold up through all the fat and bone, core lokt, soft point, Nosler partitions, anything along those lines

I thought this was a racially motivated post when i read the title...carry on

I know a few black bear, deer, rabbit hunters and they are good people. I wouldn't hesitate to hunt w them but I have no desire to shoot a bear, unless it was threatening me or I was in it's way in a thicket.

.300 weatherby was my big bear rifle! If in stand or on ground make damn sure you had a secondary (pistol) in case shot placement is bad and or your spotted before shot taken... Ive been in that situation, shit myself that day! Luckily I didn’t have to shoot her, she just ran up the tree and smelled me while a .45 was 18” from her head! Curious was all and stating dominance so her cubs could pass by! Still had dirty drawers afterwards

Found myself in a logging road between a mama and two cubs once with nothing but a black powder rifle. I just kept moving steady and she "wooofed" at me as I got a little further up the road. Worst part was one of the little fellers came out of the brush and was following me, another one of those "wooofs" and he turned and ran back towards mama.

A 454 casull is a great side arm for bear hunting. My uncle has one and it is a cannon.

Are you asking about black guys who hunt bears or just guys that hunt bears that are black?

Pan...or Pam?

Black, magic woman or black magic, woman?

:D

How about 45-70 Gov in the 540 grain +P?? That should stop a bear. Or 45-70 T/C pistol firing a 420 grain round. If you dont hit it may die of shock.

I’m in bear country from time to time and read that a 10mm is the only auto worth carrying (all others were revolvers). I use 180gr rounds.

if 10mm didn’t have such a deep penetration on soft objects I’d carry one as a edc... great for charging bears tho bc will go in the head/chest and reach all the way to the ass with 200g!

As far as side arms go, I have my choice between a .45 Colt or a .357 +p, I hope either would do the trick.
