Having to go with Time Warner because DTV has gone completely insane and wanted to charge me $300 just to set up DTV at our new house....I already have internet through time warner but need to get a cable splitter since I am doing the install myself....Any differences in splitters? I know Monster makes a good one but is $15...I know they say the higher GHZ, the better....I am one of those people that I want everything with my TV to be perfect. I spent alot of money on my TV and I want the best picture quality I can get.....

Question is though...is a cable splitter just a cable splitter?

and yes I already have HDMI cables set up for everything.

Pay the $300... It will be way cheaper in the long run.... TW was at $89 for the first year of our contract with dig cable, 2 boxes and hbo. it is now $139... Our contract is up at the end of the month and we are going back to DTV.. if you are out of contract get it in your wifes name as a new customer....

if you want the best picture quality, time warner will piss you off. yes dtv is expensive, but i think it's worth it.
a few years ago i had tw come in and give me the best deal they could do and finally gave in and told them to install it. within 24 hrs i called them and told them to get their crap out of my house.

sorry, i don't know about the splitters

well, my dad works for TW and can get me all the discounts and promotions anytime they come up and no contract...

We have to pay the $300 because they are going to have to fish through 3 walls plus charge me $105 to transfer services to the new house and $75 for the pole beccause I refuse someone to drill into my new roof...

Why can't your pops just get you the splitters?
He could, but might be a couple of days before he could get it....They are getting hard up about giving out stuff anymore.
I was just gonna head up to Walmart on my lunch and pick one up so that I could set everything up tonight.

Franly if you're in a hurry, then I don't see what the big deal about saving $10 is....
Yes GHz is necessary and quality will matter - and and Shawn said you may need an amp too. You can only split so much, inherently each split = decreased SNR of the signal. Of course with the signal being all digital, I bet it mnatters a lot less than the old analog days.

regarding charging/paying to fish wires:
do NOT ever, ever, ever let some unknown joe come in and do that to run cable, phone, network, whatever. They will drill holes anywhere and everywhere they can to do it the easiest way possible. It will barely be secured and look like crap.
E.g. instead of fishing through the wall and putting in a nice plate, you'll get a hole in your floor w/ a wire sticking out.
Do it yourself, running low voltage wiring is not hard if you plan ahead and measure carefully. You can buy all teh supplies + beer to pay yourself afterwards for less.

I used to sub-contract for DTV and you wouldn't believe the junk you'd find, also go to Home depot and get a bag of quickcrete and a 5.00 chainlink fence post and make your own post mount. That's all they're going to do....

Yes. It matters less, but it does matter. Our signal strength at the drop from TW was marginal. Adding a splitter made it worse.

picked up an RCA splitter rated for up to 2.4ghz at HHgregg yesterday...hooked everything and the picture looks great! I see no difference in quality VS. Directv.
