Any of you guys play drums? I've been playing for years and always wanted to try making different style sticks. After seeing some overpriced "rods" for sale at music stores I figured I'd make my own.

The red ones are (7) 3/16" poplar rods and a single 1/4" brazilian hardwood center. The black ones are (7) 3/16" poplar rods. I love the sound these give me when I'm looking for a wider/softer sound than solid sticks give me. Whatcha think?

Won't those get chewed to all hell banging on a hi-hat?
Unless you keep it low and hit from the top down, I guess.

I used to play a LOT back in HS and some college, but not for awhile... the old Tama Swingstar's are in cases downstairs.

I still play every chance I get.The problem is every chance I get is usually after everyone goes to bed,so it's mostly acoustic guitar I play now.Sometimes though when they are gone,I turn the stereo on High,Sit down behind the Drums and play until the neighbors call the police!!!!!Those sticks look cool,I would like to give it a try.

They will definately get chewed up if you play them like you would regular sticks. The point of these is for lighter playing where you don't want the bright/crisp sound of solid sticks. I bought a set of wire brushes for playing lighter stuff but they were just too quiet. They are great for jazz type playing but I don't do much of that. They have a nice wide/broader sound on the drums and a softer, more mellow sound on cymbals. The red pair in the pics have about 3 weeks of sunday morning/night/wed. night playing on them at church. Obviously, I'm not playing hard rock there, but I still get a little loud at times.

I have been talking to a guy at Sam Ash about them and he is wanting a few pairs to use and might be interested in selling them on his website for me. After figuring out my cost in the materials and time to make a set, I'm probably going to be marketing them and selling for somewhere around 12.00/set. Still alot cheaper than the Vic Firth hot rods which are usually around 20.00/set. I've already purchased enough end caps and tubing in both red and black to build 100 sets. I've just got to find a better supplier for the wood rods.

Good Luck with your endeavor man!!!!

Nice work. I used to beat my rods pretty hard on some Sabian B8 hats, and while they wore, they still held up nicely. Suprisingly well. I need to get back behind a kit. Been too long.

I've been playing for over 20 yrs. I used to play those rod stlye sticks a lot in one of the bands I was in, really helped w/ volume control.

I stopped using them for the price alone. I'd love to try out a one of your sets.

My current Pearl Master Works set-up.

I can't see :poop:!

Very nice kit. I wish I had the room to set something like that up. I'll have to take a pic of my dads '68 Ludwig black oyster double bass kit and post it up here. It's atleast as big as yours. I get lost playing it. Just too much stuff to try to hit.

Wow that is quite a set up.

I used to play a fairly large set, not that much but way more than the average indie rocker, then I got sick of it and decided to pare down. Last I played out, I was using one small tom, one floor tom, 4 cymbals and the hihats. I had to be as creative as possible, and work the nuances of each piece. I liked rod bundles a lot as part of the "tool pack," but it did get expensive cos they do get chewed up. Haven't played in a few years, but if I go back these would be of great interest to me!

I'm a big Rush (Neil Peart) fan myself and a fellow drummer. I just about wet myself looking at your drum kit. I would have LOVED to have had that in high school, but now that I have kids that are already expressing interest in drums (a 5 year old, a 2 year old and a 15 month old that all love to watch dad play drums at church), I'm glad that the kit is AT church and not at my house. Although, if I can save some coin, I will probably invest in a set of Roland V drums like those at church so I can plug in HEADPHONES!

As a side note, I'd bet rolls and flams would be a little more interesting with the extra recoil that the multi-sticks would have. Am I right that they are about the total diameter of a mallet stick?

I play a little drums.... I'm mainly a guitarist but do play the cajun, bongo's, and conga's some.... Mainly just small stuff to add to home recordings. If any of you frequent music forums you may know me there as Guitarpix.

I can see it now, I just can't see :poop: beyond the kit! Don't tell me...big Rush fan. ;)
Katuah, all I have to do is watch some old Buddy Rich vids to remind me that less is often more.

Winner, winner, turkey dinner! Already have tickets for the April 1 show in G-boro!

You are right about BR, that guy could kill it on a 4 piece. I (unfortunately) started playing about the time BR died.

I would love to have some v drums. The set I play at church is a nice tama set but I don't care for the cymbals. They are all AA sabians but I don't like the sound they produce.

The black rods measure 9/16" and red ones are 5/8". I have two sets of each made up to sell and will be making more once I get more wood ordered.

Can I exchange the turkey dinner for one of those tickets? I grew up listening to the Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead. I can't practice unless I've got two kits and a friend to play the other. ;) M

Man, I haven't played much in years. I traded my kit for a beat-up CRX about 8 years ago. I don't have room for a full kit today, but I'm working on lining up a set of V-Drums. Full mesh, nice controller. If I can get those, I'll be happy once again. I'd love to pick up the bass someday, though.

When I was growing up I wanted to take drums. Mom was like oh no...lol Dad got out one of his 78's (yes I said 78) and play a BR drum solo I was amazed at his skill! Here's a video of him in 1948 listen to the solo part about 1:30 into it. Damn man could beat a drum. Needless to say I never did take up drums.
