My 98 S10 4.3 ls automatics "Service engine soon" light just came on, never seen that before. 169100mi. I recently broke and replaced the throttle body w a junkyard one in pretty good shape, also 98. It runs fine, will bald a tire easily but the idle is about 5-600. I see a starbit on the throttlestop but a sticker under the hood says don't adjust idle it is automatic, I guess the computer does it? I did not clean the sensor in the used TB and wonder if i should replace it w the one in my original broke tb. I know I should get the code read, but looking for some advice anyway.

Does it run any differently than before the light came on? The first thing to do would be to run it to an autoparts store and have them read the code for you. Make sure you get the actual code number, don't let them read it and say "oh it says you need an 02 sensor" or anything like that. Just get the number, brief description and post it up along with any noticeable differences in the way it runs.

Thanks a whole lot guys.I was driving the piss out of it when I noticed the light, but seems to be running no different and cranks fine, the idle was 500 w the factory tach when and i let it idle 10 mins after gettin home from work, looking for my Haynes manual. It idled at 600 after restarting it, I think it used to be about 8?? I'm gonna try the battery thing right now transman thanks again for the quick replies  Transman, I've heard theres some procedure you can do to disable the allthetime, daytime running lights??? I think I tried it years ago and it didn't work.

transman, I have a rebuilt 4l60e? trans that was modified somehow to make it pull my boat better according to the rebuilder. I'm gonna check w him before resetting because it is not factory spec anymore and I'm concerned a reset may confuse the brain under the hood and interfere w my 2+ mpg since the rebuilding.

Well.........................apparently some guys been calling his CSEFI engine a TBI o_O ........He also found out today that if he did'nt reconnect pcv hose back to the air intake after replacing the TB ( just because it hides neatly behind the intake assembly and looks like it's attached at a glance ) and he does'nt see it undone and drives around for months, it will cause the " Service Engine Soon " light to glow occationaly, AND some guy who reads the code (when it comes back on today), will see a code for lean or rich air from the intake manifold sensors, AND if that guy opens the hood and reconnects it after taking a quick glance at the motor the first guy will feel like an idiot :eek:ops: and the light WILL go off!!. The first guy asked " what do I owe you " , and was told, " nothing " by other guy after he stopped laughing, so the first guy told him " I'll pay you to not tell anybody "

Apparently it happened when some guys stupid Croc shoe slipped off the footfeed while he was trying to "finess" some gravel slipage, while backing uphill in his driveway, and the part on the right that was attached to the butterfly had apparently been sticking in the bore when it was closed and was bent by the sticking when opening and finally broke off when the butterfly slammed shut after the shoe slipped off the peddle and the part fell into the intake, jambing the throttle about wide open ( even after he may have punched it a few times to try to make it stop reving ) and it reved until the key was turned to the off position. He sent some pics to me for clarity.............notice the sticky black residue that would not be there if proper mantainence had been done regularly o_O.......the topside of the bore is spotless
