Any NC bumper height laws?

I know Virginia will pull out the tape measure, But I don't know about NC. I like the idea of mounting my rear bumper above the frame on my EB since I trimmed the bottom off. The bumper looks like a rear plow at it's mounted location in the frame. Going to run 37's. Probably too high anyways with 37's but above the frame rails puts it 4" higher at decapitating level. Looks much better and serves a better purpose up there but I plan on being semi street legal. Anybody know without me calling NCDMV to ask?

Just wondering...

as far as I know...the "official" law is no more than 6" lift over stock...whether that's tires/body/suspension...

as far as just moving the bumper, I have no idea where they take the measurements from (or where they get the stock measurements)...

not that anybody really cares too often...

6" over stock which includes any lift gained by oversized tires.

never seen them measure, but i've gotten tickets for it before.

if it's obvious you're way too big, they are gonna get ya....

if you're ride is so close to being on the legal/illegal borderline that they need a tape measure to tell, they aren't going to pull you.....

On page 70 of my November 04 Four Wheeler magazine it lists the lift laws for every state in the country. Here is what it says about North Carolina. .
Not only can your vehicle not be taller than 12 feet, 6 inches (with or without load), but the headlights are limited to 42 inches. Also the truck can't be elevated more than 6 inches in front or in back by any modification without written approval from the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.

I read that same thing. Ghey. Yeah like I am going to ask permission to do what I want to my truck. Big brother can go to .......

ill chance it......that law is retarded

I'm sure it depends on where you live. My eb is a 73...the inspection sticker is almost 2 yrs old. I've been stopped at roadblocks and just to talk to several times...they've only asked about it twice and I tell them it's an antique--doesn't have to comply with laws..and they say good to go. YMMV but I wouldn't/don't worry for sure. Either way, if your bronco was mfg'd (not it's claimed year, but the year it was built) more than 35 yrs ago it legally is an antique in nc and pretty much doesn't have to deal with equipment violation laws...though I'm sure it can be fought one way or the other...

Pretty much what I'm trying to say is, this isn't VA...don't live in fear of the HP or local police.

As far as the 42" headlight deal. That is 42" from the center of the headlight to the ground but I've never known anyone at all to enforce or know of anyone who was actually measured. I've know people to get nailed with the lift law. Some have had several tickets but managed to get them thrown out. Some haven't and others who are way over the height have yet to get pulled. Guess it depends on the officer really. Had a friend of mine last year who got a ticket and went to court. You couldn't tell by the eye if he was over or not but rest assured the court pulled the tape measure. His ticket was thrown out

Thanks for the input gang. I think I will take my chances. I have always been pulled by cool cops that just want to bullshit. It's a 74 but titled as a 71. The bumper just looks way too gay down in stock location.
As far as total lift, I'm at 7" with the 37's.

Cheers!

hehe

So just let some air out if you go to court for a height violation :)
That will adjust the 7" down to 6 ;)

Va I got pulled and I just have 33s on a jeep. And I had NC plates. They complained my tires stuck out to far, but fortunately the guy just gave me a warning. Va is overly anal about all the traffic laws. One of best things about moving out of there was getting away from the state police :)

blah, it costs to play. a lift ticket cost $125 last time i got one. how many do you think you'll get in a year? 1? 2? big deal. tires cost more than that :)

yeah...in NC...as long as your not fording the water fountain in front of the courthouse they arent gonna mess with ya.

I live in Va and it's terrible. They added the height law in the 80s. At the time I had a 78 CHEVY 12in lift 44in tires.I got a ticket every time.e I went out. So was left with no choice but to bring it down. Then they came up with tires can only stick out from fender 3in unless you added marker lights. Now woth lifted trucks coming back I see tires sticking way out with offset wheels. It's only a matter of time before the start ticketing for that again. Be alot of money lost on wheels.

Holy shitballs. This thread was from almost 15 years ago dude.

Have never heard of this law being enforced at inspection stations, or by police officers. Got a speeding ticket one time with my cruiser, probably 8" lift with 35s, never even questioned the bumper height.

If you look at the statute, it basically loopholes trucks and vehicles that offroad.

I saw I had replied to it and had to do a double take. Wow that is old! Mine is about 7" taller than it was when I last posted. No bumper height tickets!!
