Are the oil related positions still as hot as they were a few years ago?

A buddy and I were talking and the idea of working in the oil industry popped up.

I think its something worth looking into , but don't know where to even start.

What positions are available for previously employeed tradesmen(electricians, mechanics, millwrights etc)?

Does anyone have any good ideas as to where to start looking for info? Who to talk to and so forth?

Are these positions that are 'family friendly' to the extent that it would be a possibility for our families to relocate as well, as it would require relocation from our current residences.

I'm just looking for a starting point and info on this career path.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A friends son went up to truck drive in North Dakota. Says a good driver can pull in 80-100k....if they can stay out of the drugs and drinking that are the downfall of many up there. Sounds like good money...but cost of living is high up there....housing still not caught up with demand.

Go to the Dakotas..

If I went to williston I'd probably live in Bismarck and live in a camper the weeks on then go home on the weeks off.

Go to the Dakotas..
either williston or Midland tx seem to be the biggest booms right now
Do you like cold?
I'm not opposed to it...but 50 below isn't something you simply get used to lol

over thanksgiving I was privy to some conversation with several oil field guys sitting at the airport bar.

The shale fields of the Dakotas... They spoke of findings in Tenn. also

Not 100% sure what my step brother does in the industry but he is up in N. Dakota from normally March to December. Lives in a trailer that is split into a couple of units for each person. Seems to make good money. Some of the guys have campers but it all depends on how their contracting firm pays them, some let you expense stuff, some give a stipend. The guys with a stipend often have the campers. He has been doing it now about 3 years.

Check clarksburg wv. There os a big boom in the area and adds in the paper for drivers every day with good starting pay. The rental market is a little out of whack from what I understand, but not sure to what extent. My dad has been involved in one form or another of fracking for 30+ years. I did a project in the early 80's on it with info from his and his employer. The local paper is called "clarksburg exponent telegram".

I just retired in December 2013 with 30 years in the oilfield. I absolutely LOVED it! There is nothing like working outside. I worked for Dowell pumping services back in the 80's (northwestern PA) which was bought out by Schlumberger, worked there 4 years then was transferred to Prudhoe Bay,AK (aka Deadhorse) and worked there for 26 more years before my wife told me that it was time to be home. The diversity of the work in the service line made days go by quickly. I worked in Prudhoe on a 3 week on, 3 week off rotation.
Prudhoe winters are friggin cold just like the Dakotas, always wind blowing.
My avatar is a pickup in Alpine Oilfield west of Prudhoe.
Anyway...seems everybody up there is hiring as well in North Dakota. ND would not be my choice.
I drove an 18 wheeler w/ self contained trailer (140,000lbs) with 2 triplex pumps within and a lot of valves. Mixed a slurried cement at specific densities for setting the drilling rigs casing etc etc. and pumped a lot of stimulation fluids, I'd guess I spent 2 hours on the average day outside rigging up and down, all the rest of the time was waiting on the drilling rig to be ready.
Glad I had a furnace in my Arctic Pump Van ( CPS361) off shore skid in a nice trailer.
AND I was one of those damn Frac guys. Good times! 10,000 HP at my finger tips (touch screen PC)
Prudhoe Bay/North Slope allows NO drinking at all. Most camps have some sort of exercise room. And FREE food! All you want to eat. Free random Piss tests too.
Weston, WV also has a SLB district as does Beckley. Horsehead,NY also
Good Luck in your search
Alaska is All about safety, and I've heard that the Dakotas need to spend more time on safety (IMO)
So who is hiring... Schlumberger (coiled tubing, wireline and slickline etc , diesel mechanics).
CH2MHill... (vacuum trucks, heavy equipment and mechanics etc)
I believe if you are interested in applying for work, it would be beneficial to find an Anchorage office number rather than Prudhoe, most companies hire from Anchorage mostly.

Weston wv and clarksburg are not real high crime areas, bit not much to do.

Facfoid!: Weston wv is home to the 2nd largest hand cut stone buildup in the world, the Transalageny Lunatic Asylum. There are many other creepy facts too, look it up.

hard to get into pipe line with out knowing someone to get your foot in the door.i have been in it for about 10 years and the one thing i can tell you for sure is it is not "family friendly" you will be living in campers, motels or man camps. the money is good. as a heavy equip.operator you can expect $3000.00 a week a welder with your own rig 5 to 6 grand a week. you might look into working in the refineries. it's not the kind of money you would make on pipe line but it is a steady job and still good money.as far as the oil field, i worked oilfield when i lived in texas, and once again always traveling and money not quite as good. have several friends in dakota and from what they say it's a circus up there and pay keeps going down due so many folks trying to get in on it. i work for a company called north star energy out of houston tx. we have a office in huntersville. don't know what your field is but could talk to them, can't hurt. i know last year they had a college student doing his internship at that office.
