been swanging since 1995...found a plenty. What kind of hunting ya'll do? I'm relic with a love towards colonial era relics.Got my share of C.W. relics also.

We just started we just try to find anything the best things we found is a bunch of square nails and a door handle face with the hole for a skeleton key

sent with my two fat thumbs on a tiny touchscreen so please excuse any mipsellings

all I gotta say is:research, research, research! Put yourself where you know something is gonna be. Also get permission first. Oh yea.Stay away from Crusoe Island. Them folks is crazy!
What machine you swingin? I'm using White's myself. Got a Mxt as my main and my old 5900 is the backup.

my dad was raised down there and lives in my grandparents house on 130 near Old Dock.I spent alot of time down there on weekends/holidays/summers.

Last time I swung a metal detector was 2009 in afghanistan I was looking for ied's I don't think I could do it as a hobby without causing myself severe emotional distress on the other hand it looks fun and I've always been a treasure hunter at heart that's why I like junkyards

they put out a call for machines to be donated and sent over to ya'll.Did you use a military unit or civi?
What has happened to me since I have been doing it so long and basically bottom feeding behind 50+ years of other hunters,is I hear every little beep or squeek that comes from a cell phone. You might not hear it but damn if I don't. I have a constant tone droning in my earphones all the time and the smallest abnomally I investigate.

I spent a whole week looking for my moms wedding ring that she dropped out her window going down the road a main road. The worst part everyone asking what we was looking for but you couldn't tell them a 7k dollar wedding ring. After a week of metal detecting and raking a 50x20yard area my grandpa helped look for 15 minutes and found it. But I enjoy swingin one never know what you can find

I have been thinking about getting a metal detector for a long while. I have been a "treasure" hunter since I was a kid. I love finding things regardless of value so I think this may be a fun hobby for me.

What would be some recommendations for a metal detector for a newbie?

Kellyco.com is a good starting place for NEW prices on machines.I've never bought a new machine tho.Somebody just starting out,I'd recommend buying a used, medium priced machine. Todays cheapy machines are better than the top of the line machines 25 years ago.Check out Tesoro and the Cibola machine would be a good one to start with.
The biggest problem with new folks to the hobby is the expectation of finding something great right off the bat and finding something good on every trip.Just doesn't work that way.Pick your machine, learn that machine, keep trying.
Another thing is figure out what kind of hunting you want to do and RESEARCH.
And as with four wheelin, get permission first.

Well my unit was given some special ones designed for soldiers easy to use you could run them over with a truck then drowned them and they still worked but no cool features just basic detection, other units may have received civilian detectors or they might have issued them until the military supply channel could provide them

the civi units had to be for a stop-gap measure. I guess the military units are alot more sensitive than what they used to be.The Chineese and N.Koreans were selling anti-personel mines that had very little metal in them and the older machines had a hard time with them.

I want to detect my newly purchased property. Dont want to spend too much on a unit that I wouldnt have much use for after I have combed my property. What would be a decent unit to purchase? looking to spend $250-350. Can I get something decent at this price?

go to Kellyco.com...check out Tesoro brand...Cibola is the machine...light weight and fairly powerfull. When you get done with your property, remember to completely remove the batteries. Many a machine has been ruined from leaking batteries.
