I am a student approaching graduation from my local CC in the mechanical eng. tech. program. I will be attending UNCC in the fall under the 2+2 MET program. Just wondering if there are any guys on here that are in a simailar situation...trying to learn a few "in's & out's" or get some insider advice, like where is a good place to live? Is on-campus housing worth it? where to look for parking? I am 27 and dont really want to live in a dorm, but if they have like on-campus apartments that would ok. Any way just checking...:popcorn: thanks -J

There are tons of appartments around campus.. just go check them out. I lived in Mallard Green Apartments http://mallardgreen.com/ and walked/rode to class everyday to avoid the parking price. We would jump bikes off the office roof into the pool every now and then..

I also lived at Summit Green Apartments http://www.ashfordgreenjmg.com/ They were nice but it'll be a walk or ride to campus... may as well get a parking sticker.. BUT it is directly beside Flying Saucer.

I also lived at Colonial Grand Mallard Creek... a drive to campus (5 miles) but nice place.. http://colonialprop.com/property-info/?cid=887 They also have garages...

right on, if its anything like the one in raleigh, they have killer beer specials on mondays. I doubt i'll have much time for bike stunts or bar hopping though...I have done too much of that already...haha. Hence the 27 and still in school deal...oh well live and learn i guess. How much should I expect to pay on average for an apartment within walking distance?

As said, there are a ton of off campus apartments around the University, off Hwy 29(N Tryon), Hwy 49 (University City Blvd), Mallard Creek Ch Rd, and John Kirk Rd... price all depends if you want to live by yourself, or upto 3 others... I lived at UT North and Colville while I was there... both are older complexes, and there are nicer ones avail now...

Some other close ones to look at are Campus Edge, Campus Walk, University Walk... and then there are some off Hwy 29 that could be within walking distance to Duke Hall... and there are some that park at the Food Lion across the street, and walk over to Duke...

You can find some that are within walking distance to campus, but from most you will still have a trek ahead of you... Having graduated with a BSME, I can tell you that you will spend a good amount of time at Duke Hall (which is located away from the rest of campus)... there are shuttles that go around campus if you want to take them... There is parking right in front of Duke as well... If you decide to drive, there is alot of parking avail on campus, but the earlier you get there, the better spot youll have...

Most of campus only has classes 4 days a week, but in MEGR you will probly have Fridays as well... Most classes are 75min, twice a week, IIRC...

IIRC, when I graduated in 2007 a year long commuter pass was ~$250/yr... but Ive slept since then, so that may not be 100% accurate...

If you dont really want to be in the middle of all the university stuff, there are many apartments and houses for rent in the Concord/Harrisburg area... but would require ~10-15 minute commute in the mornings...

good info, thanks. I am actually thinking about wanting to be close to campus as possible, for a few reasons. I feel like i will be having to spend a lot of extra time in the library or computer labs burning the midnight oil, so i would rather be close to home. Plus if i need to run home between classes or something it wont be a major thing to get back (dealing w/ traffic and such). But thats mainly speculation at this point. I did off campus at ASU back in the day and that may have been part of the reason i was unsuccessful there. Its just easy once your home to say "ya know, i dont feel like driving back to class". I guess ultimately its just an excuse though. I do want to avoid living w/ some wild 18/19 year old, or being in the party central deal though. Do you have any idea how many classes are still held in the Smith hall? From the UNCC website its seems like the MET classes are there and the ME classes are in the new buildings (DUKE I assume).

Ben. Buddy. You graduated in 2007. I was there.

Lots of good apartments around there. Im a BSME as well, graduated UNCC in 2007, good school. Best place I lived was renting a house out the back of campus on Mary Alexander Place or Lane, off of Mary Alexander Road. Also check out the apartments behind the Exxon and Jack in the box. We rented a 2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath with attached garaged for 770/month. It was a really great place to live if you like peace and quiet, and a "nice" feel.

If its not too much trouble to switch, I'd think the BSME would open more doors for you. At least in my job hunting experience they preferred BSME to MET. They didn't have MET @ State, so I can't comment on the program directly

Youre right Matt, It was a long day yest...

Im with Taylor, if possible Id try to go for BSME if possible... esp if you already have all/most of the math classes... I think the main difference is MET stops at Calc 1 or 2 & BSME goes through Diff Eq

Also, agreeing with Matt, if I would do it over, Id get a house relatively close to campus...
