Driving wife's Grand Cherokee last Friday night on the interstate around 70mph. It gave a little lurch (had been running fine, always maintained, never leaked anything, never run hot) and just quit. Tach was freaking out. Timing chain and gears are intact and in good shape. Timing seems to be good. Cam and crank not broken. Low compression in first 4 cyl, but has been running like a champ up until last week. It has 105k miles. Any ideas that I might have missed?

Yes. No more Jeeps for me.

Its a Chrysler thing I believe. The 4.7, 3.7 and 2.7 all junk, coming from somebody with a 3.7 liberty, I keep waiting for it to puke on me one day.

What year is it, and does it have the multi-displacment system?

the same Exact thing happend today at my work on a 2000 4.7 GC, lost compression in 1-6 cylinders, only running on 2 cylinders. at first i thought it was the ignition coils so i threw some in there that i had laying around but didnt help, so i did a compression check on it and thats when i found out that it had lost it all... still dont know what happend to it, i pushed it in the yard and grabbed another car to work on.

its at wife's family's garage now. They are going to take it apart and see what broke...maybe something in the valves? dunno...will post what happened maybe that will help someone else in the future. did find a used motor at marsh's in siler city, might end up just having to swap it out. hope not.

Was the crank sensor and the cam sensor. Compression seems to be fine - maybe was just superflooded with gas earlier (?) Anyway - hope this will help someone else...try those sensors and you should be back on the road for less than a hundred bucks.
