I'm trying to learn how to geocache. I thought it would be fun to do with the family when we go on trips and stuff. So I want to find some near us first so I can learn how to find them before I drag my 3 year old along. I went to the geocaching website, got a couple lat./long. coordinates in the GPS.

I tried one last week, but the battery went dead. So I tried again today. I know I was close because I even looked at the satellite image view from googlemaps before I left the house (is that cheating?). It should have been right next to a building (should I have dug thru the pine needles in the landscaping?). But I couldn't find it, then it started raining harder, so I quit looking. I went to another one and at first the GPS had me on the wrong side of 29 from Lowes Motor Speedway. So I turned off the route (i guess it tries to find a close address when you make a route from lat./long.?) and just browsed the map and made my way over to the speedway. I know I was close, but again, rain, and I didn't see it.

The geocaching website lists these as easy to find and easy to get to. What the heck am I doing wrong other than giving up too easily in the rain?

Anybody in Concord or Harrisburg into Geocaching that might be willing to show a beginner what to do?

Wife and I did a lot of geocaching pre-kids, even some in Concord. Dunno what you're doing wrong, its kind of self-explanatory. Read the previous logs before going out caching. If it hasnt been found, or there are a lot of DNF's, don't mess with it. Also check the size (should be listed on the cache site), microcaches suck ass. We used to print the cache sheets off and decode the clue if necessary in the field. Now, the few caches we've done with 3 kids, I just decode the clue at home so I have a better idea what I'm getting into.
I guess you could always contact the cache owner for another hint, tell them where you were, ask if you were way off, etc.

there is a cashe somewhere at the rock garden on Daniel trail in UNF.I read the clues and location a couple of years ago.

WOOHOO!

I tried one today and found my first geocache! What a nice day to be outside.

I have found that my tomtom keeps wanting to show me on a street, so if I am too close to a road, it will move my indicator to the road.

it sounds cool i'd never heard of it before. so when you find it, do you just put it back for others or...?
you let the little kids rifle thru the McTreasure, they take some crap, leave more crap behind. To me, its all about the hike, a good excuse to find not only cool hikes, but neat little urban parks or sights I would have never found if I wasnt geocaching. For example, I've been to Bur Mil park in Greensboro a million times, but if I wasnt geocaching, I probably never would've knew about the tiny bamboo grove there.

4WD in Uwharrie Geocache, my log

Go to geocaching.com and search for my caches at URE. There are several there...all of mine are on the trails. Same user name as here.

I see a geo-wheelin' trip in the future....I've lead several of those there.

The TomTom and other street nav types will generally be more trouble than they are worth. You need a handheld. A Legend series Garmin......cheap and reliable..... is very usable.

If I were in you area I would be glad to go with you and give some pointers. If you ever get to Winston Salem let me know.

edit: Go here ... http://ncgeocachers.org/ ... it's a forum for NC cachers. You should be able to find someone in your area there.
