Have a job offer on the table to be an assistant controller at a billion dollar plant out there. All I know about the area is that the plant IS the area. I did like the seclusion and open fields, and I did see there was a Super Walmart...haha. Struggling with the idea of uprooting, but think it's the right move. Just have to find the right place to live, especially if little ones will be coming along in the next year or two. So far, looks like Murfreesboro takes the cake. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

one of our 4wheelin members lives up that way...man it's out in the middle of no where! Get moved in and ya can come sit in one of our meetings.

I live in Jackson, work in murfreesboro. Would you happen to be referring to Nucor? Murfreesboro is great, plan on moving back there (graduated from the small university there) in the next year or so myself. Try to avoid living in ahoskie. It will probably be where you go for most necessities other than groceries. Murf has a food lion, that's about it. I am from charlotte area so the area was quite a drastic change for me. But I have come to love the small town feel, and lack of traffic. One downside is you will be about an hour and a half from major shopping areas (may not matter to you). Outer banks can be reached in about an hour and a half as well. Best hunting and fishing in the state out here.

There's not much there. It would be better if you have enough money to bring what you want and need to you. Schools could an issue. Probably use private or home school. Although it is just a 12 year problem then it goes away. North east is mostly agricultural and poor. You can go to Virginia Beach ,Norfolk, and Outer Banks easily to shop or relax on weekends. I came very close to moving there some 35 years ago when the economy was better and I'm sure glad I didn't. I hate to cast bad light on a region and there are good folks where ever you are but there are a lot less of them there.

Yeah...Nucor is it. I'm just north of Charlotte...outside of Salisbury. The big draw is getting that much closer to the OBX. I've also known the CEO and other executives for a few years now, text almost daily, go out drinking every couple of months...so I know the company well. Haven't told them yet, but did make HR aware, I do like everything Nucor is about, and when I interviewed, the people there were actually nice, haha. The area does look extremely poor, which is fine, I grew up poor...but I would like to avoid crime and go out to see a movie or take my prettier half to dinner.

Nucor is a great place. I will actually be there march 24th-April 4th. Should have added, the closest actual movie theatre is about an hour and a half as well haha.

I used to work at a steel mill and done a lot of business with Nucor. It is my understanding that company takes VERY good care or their employees. And that the guy sweeping the floor is making pretty good money too. That's been several years ago, but I know that company still buys from them and they are one of the top providers of steel on the east cost

Nice area but in the middle of nowhere!

Williamson, Windsor, and Scotland Neck are all quaint towns nearby that offer some amenities if you don't mind being a little bit of a drive from work.

I was scheduled to be out there the same time as you, for the psych eval they do on all their managers, but I'll be on the west coast closing the books for the company that currently signs my pay check. I don't mind driving a little...it wasn't too long ago, that Salisbury was just as 'quaint'...but was only about a 30 minute drive to civilization...so I'm sure that'll take some getting used to.

Yeah...they still are, my chick is the office manager for their corporate office in Charlotte, and I text/chat with their top brass almost daily, even drinking buddies with a couple of the executives. They all just seem like my kind of people. I'm currently with PCC, and they're a bunch of overworked stiffs. Serious joke at our annual finance conference is that a controller with 2-3 years experience is tenured, just because the mentality is to burn folks out and replace them. My 3 business $500 million/yr group alone has seen 24 heads resign in the last 18 months. Nucor has a lower than 1% turnover ratio and is renown for hiring/promoting from within.

Current commute is about an hour 15 to an hour and a half, each way from Salisbury to E Independence. If there is a wreck or game or race or if I leave between 430-6pm...I'm screwed, may as well get a hotel room...haha. If I could even get a 30-45 minute commute I'd be stoked. Even better if my chick can get transferred there and we can car pool...right now we're dropping $1000/month in gas and about 150 hours/month commuting...combined.

Personally, I'd find some land not in any of those cities. Kinda between nucor and the other towns!

That area is one of my favorites in the state. Schools aren't great but it's all about the parents anyways.

Yeah...found a couple places with houses built in the last 10 years on 5+ acres. I wouldn't mind it, but the little lady finds some faction of security having neighbors...regardless of how many firearms are accessible.

Didn't you just buy a house?
My biggest concern would be schools.

I guess it also depends whether you see this as definitely a long-term thing, or could change again in 5 years.

Yes, just bought a house coming up on a year ago. Still not even completely unpacked. Market is stronger in the area, and tax/appraisal value is 25-30k higher than what I paid (got a smoking deal). So I'm not too worried about getting screwed there.

As far as schools are concerned...that probably won't be an issue for another 5 years, so I'm safe there...for a while.

You mean 5 years isn't long term??? hahah. Right now, the progression plan that's been laid in front of me is 3-5 years before I'm running my own place again. They want to give me big mill experience, so I can handle it later. At the 3-5 year mark, move me on to a mid-size plant, and 3-5 years after that...running my own billion dollar mill again. Next move after that (assuming I'm still with the company) is move back to charlotte for a corporate executive role. That's the 10-15 year plan.

I actually need you to buy a plantation house roughly 150 to 200 years old...on a bluff overlooking the cashie river....about 500 or so acres of open fields with several white sand hills...landing or even possibly an old ferry crossing... yea man, that's what you need to buy right there.

I swing a metal detector soooooo......

Right now looks like Edenton is the top destination to live. Distant second is Murfreesboro. And a way back third place is Roanoke Rapids...may even consider living in Suffolk, Va or something before there. Haven't really looked at any Va places to live...don't know their tax structure, etc. Regardless, after doing some recon on the immediate area, some things just didn't tickle my fancy, especially for a start up family in the next year.

Gun laws are more strict in VA... as are vehicles.
If you're looking at that kind of commute, what about Elizabeth City?
thats at least a little bit bigger.

EC could work, we're already thinking 45-60 minute commute is on the table. Thanks. Regardless of tax benefits...not willing to give up any gun rights or face any issues with my vehicles. So I guess Va is out.
