we are going to camping in boone area this weekend and was planning on heading out to richland road/sampson area one day to play around. i haven't been out there in over a year and was just wondering if everything is still open? anyone been out there lately?

Last thing I saw said it was private property, but that is 100% untrue, as the road itself is still state owned. Ive been too busy to go up there in about a year, so I have no firsthand idea as to the current status. However, I just looked on the Caldwell County GIS and it is still SR1372, so they can't really stop you from using it.

thats what i thought too...there are no trespassing signs off the sides of the road but no one has ever said anything to us riding on the "road" i went to school at app and we used to go there all the time without probs...

I was up there a couple months ago. There has been some work on the roads leading to it but otherwise it hasn't changed.

we are going to try and ride there on sunday. we are leaving charlotte around 10am. should be there around 12pm. anyone want to join in?

Man I remember that creek exit right beside the bridge from about 6-7 years ago before they re-did it all.

Its a public road just don't go off playin too much or you will get trespassing tickets and definately don't get caught running the creek.....you may not walk away. I know two guys that got in major trouble for that.

We've gone back since I first made the post about the Private Property signs. After speaking with a local that lives across the creek, its still ok. There are a couple of fun playgrounds, but the creeks are where it is at.

i'll go, havent been down there for a while.

I wont go on a saturday when there's a game though, otherwise it'd be next to impossible to find myself a parking spot here in app heights.

So where/what is this place? Is it worth making a trip up from Hickory?

From Hickory, yes. Go up 321 north. Go past lenoir and continue north on 321 once it goes from 4 lanes down to 2 lanes. You will pass a gas station on the right, take a right at the next marked road, Richland Gap road. Continue down Richland road until you come around a sharpish left turn and see a very large creek (the Yadkin river) on your right with the road going through it. You are at "richlands". Cross the creek and play for a couple miles.

actually, I dont believe richlands is marked anymore, Im pretty sure the sign was torn down in the midst of construction.

^^ You may be right. It's the first paved road after the gas station on the right.

Its never my day. But what do you mean its not paved? There's no way they ripped the pavement up...

when i drove by there it was just gravel to the top of the hill. I think they did rip it up because they are building an extra lane right there. I dunno about over the first hill tho.

The DOT sure loves spending our tag, inspection, and ticket money, don't they...

I was there 2 weeks ago...it's cool..just be friendly with the locals(don't go barrel assing down the paved road to get to the trail...wave and even stop and talk to someone if they are outside...it is just a good way to keep up public relations
