I know there are some old-school car guys on here. I'm trying to learn to pinstripe by hand and wanted to see if anyone on here does. So far, some of my practice stuff looks OK, but most of it's crap. There's a lot of Youtube videos and stuff out there, but nothing beats sitting down with someone who already knows what thery are doing.

I've always been interested in this. Even bought an inker set once and tried but no luck. I sold them immediately after I found out how hard it was. It's definately an art.
I remember a guy in East Tn (Quack) that did this and dude had the shakes BAD until his inker hit the car and then he laid the best lines ever. He did alot of striping and lettering for race cars. I remember him working all day once up at Bristol and must have taken in at least $400-$500. If you find the right event, you can make awesome money!!!

No skills of my own but I was fortunate enough to grow up in the trucking/construction industry in Boston. I worked for a couple Italian firms and man, EVERYTHING got hand pinstriped. I used to run an Autocar tractor pulling a lowbed and sometimes a dump trailer, The differential and frame rails on the tractor were done and when you put up the dump trailer you could see the company name and "spaghetti" pinstriping all over the lift cylinder. Whenever we got a new truck the striping guy would be @ our shop for a couple days...I miss those days! Definitely a dying art, everything is damn vinyl now....so lifeless and void of creativity. You use to be able to identify who did a guys truck just by the "squiggles", everyone had a trademark. I still have one contact in Mass if you want to make the trip, Guys name is Mark Fumia, he owns a shop called Paint Dezign http://www.paintdezign.com/Photo Gallery.htm He does some vinyl stuff but a lot of free hand stripping and gold leaf. He did a couple motorcycle helmets for me with a series of tiny (3/8" tall) stick figures all connected sexually all around the rim! If you contact him tell him Hoop sent ya,. I wish you well on your noble quest my friend !

Money would be nice if I could get good at it, I just want to learn just to say I did, really. I love looking at the work some of these guys put out and wish I could do that.

So far one of the few things I've figured out (that wasn't on Youtube) was to do the left side first since I'm right handed. That way, when I do the right side, my hand isn't in the way and I'm less likely to pull my pinky over wet paint. All I have to practive on is some old storm window sashes, and let me tell you - glass is a bit tricky to work on due to the "depth".

I wish I still had them, along with the Harley ! One of the biggest regrets of my life is that I have never been a big picture taker.

Here is some of my friends art work
