Anyone else see a problem with this?

I got a car this week for scrap. Woman said it ran funny. I opened the hood when I got it home and found this.

I was dumbfounded that it had actually started and drove up on the trailer.

Then I saw this.

Yes the coil is laying on top of the master cylinder. I am surprised it ran at all.
 
I used to do that to keep my step-daughter from driving a vehicle when she was gounded. Cheap anti-theft.

My dad used to do the same thing to my Jeep when I was 16. Little did he know I figured it out and it fed my mechanical upgrades, 4x4 and racing craving...
 
Actually, correction.... I used to pull the main wire off the cap. Looks to me like the original coil was suspected bad and they plugged in a replacement but never "installed" it. I'd bet that it needs to be bolted to the vehicle to get some ground.
 
friend of mine in highschool had a cj5 with a 304.We spent 6 months periodicaly switching 2 plug wires and then a couple days later switching them back.He never figured out the random running issues he had.
