I recently Bought a truck from a lady whose father owned it before he died. The title is MIA. Looking at the bonded title route. Has anyone ever done this and how long of a process was it?
did it. get your insurance company to help you with it. its not quick (couple weeks), but its easy as long as you KNOW the title is clear. the DMV inspector will be there to check the vehicle so...
I called the DMV a few days ago, the lady says it takes over 6 months. Didn't really believe her. What all do they inspect on the vehicle? Safety stuff vin, etc?
Don't you have to pay 1.5x the value of the vehicle for a bonded title too? I once looked into it for a 51 Pontiac I was working on but didn't feel like dealing with it so I unloaded it
You can do this without going through the bonded title route. If the vehicle was left to one heir, that heir can go to the DMV with you and transfer the title to you through the lost title application. They will need a copy of the will, death certificate, etc. If the vehicle was not specifically listed in the will, there is paperwork that can be signed and notarized by all potential heirs allowing it to be sold. I would tell you to ask the DMV how to do this, but if it is like our local office you will get 6 different answers by asking 5 people.
A friend of mine did this about 20 years ago. His wife's grandfather died leaving an 80 CJ5 to no one. It was titled only in his name. His widow and all heirs had to sign off allowing the grandaughter to buy it. If I remember correctly, that title could not be found either.
