Anyone ever heard of Globe Road?

Yea, you are correct. Last time I was there I was let off with a warning.

aw damn! I was wanting to head up there this weekend :(

I heard that there where people who lived on it though

And I quote "The Globe trail, which wasn't really the Globe trail, has never been open. It's just that the fact that it's closed is now being enforced."

I'll let the old timer chime in to explain.

Yes, there are people that live on Globe Rd., it is not closed. The trail off of Globe Rd. IS closed.

Some friends and I used to run that trail about once a week back in college. It's a shame you can't run it anymore, it was a fun little trail. Has a challenging hill climb and last i heard a nice rock garden.....never got to see the rock garden though.

yeah its definately closed, i heard about ticketing and all and actually saw it when i was out on a bike ride in that area, about 5 people pulled over getting the book...definately not a good idea to even drive down that road with a rig probably just to avoid confrontation

drive there, ride away in a cop car, never get your rig back. That is the best way to explain it.

I didnt wanna run the trail, I just want to drive down the road.
Is the actual road itself closed?

No the road is not closed. I was on it in the last month or so. Don't know where the "trail" used to be but it wasn't very obvious, probably a good thing. Definetly be careful, i would hate to run into the wrong person back there in the sticks. I can tell you that the road is not all that exciting, maybe worth a ride down if you are in the area, but not worth making the trip just for that road. It is pretty amazing how quickly you leave civilzation coming from the blowing rock side.

The Globe road is open it is a really long dirt road that you can get on in Blowing Rock downtown. There is a trail off the Globe Road that is now closed. The road is a long dirt road and people do live on it so it is open. It goes to a small community called Upton. A few miles later you get to the Globe Church and where the Globe School used to be it was washed away in a flood in 1916.

So as you can see the road is still open.

I'll be up in the area anyways, and thats really what I want to see, the lack of Civilization and stuff like that..no trails to be honest,

globe road

321 north find abington road...goto the end, turn left follow signs for globe church when you find the church right or left not real exciting but quite scenic either fork at the church

Yeah, if you go down Globe and make the correct turns, you can come out on highway 90 in Lenoir. I did it once just driving around, but couldn't repeat the route without some studyin of a really good map.

I loved that trail. I know Rob(Rockcity) has some ole school pics on his website. Last time I was up there was about 2-3 years ago when we dragged JPScout's XJ across the big rock.:flipoff2:

That rock garden was tits. But the ditches/fingers on the northern slope would have been some of the best wheeling around.

Now you know why people are dicks about tresspassing.

I hated that trail.. lost 2 beads in a day.. got beadlocks shortly thereafter., not to mention snapping pinion #1, warping the leaf springs, and almost going off the side of the mountain with Nicole riding shotgun on her first ever wheeling trip.. :p

Patrick "Cartman" Emmons did make a pretty cool video of the day though..

Out of Blowing Rock, take the Johns River Rd, and follow it to the T intersection, which is "downtown" Upton. On the way to the T intersection you'll pass the old so-called Globe trail on your left at the beginning of the flat at the bottom of the mountain. At the T intersection, take a left and follow that road until it becomes NC 90, which is basically in "downtown" Globe. If you continue on NC 90, it will take you back toward Abington Rd and the US 321 area.

Back a few decades I was one of the motorcycle junkies that rode the Little Rocky Knob trail (what is commonly called the Globe trail now) to its intersection with the actual Globe Mtn trail, which crosses Globe Mountain (no shit :D ), crosses the Globe Mtn Rd and continues down into several branches of trails in that area. We could ride all weekend and never see the same stretch of trail twice. Those who are familiar with the "Globe" trail would immediately recognize the intersection of the Globe Mtn trail if they just knew that was it. It's at the top of the second big hill climb and runs down to the right. There's another part of it hidden at the top of the third hillclimb. Them was the good old days.

Used to be "so many trails, so little time."

Yeah, but that was decades ago! Now that I'm retired it's more like "so much time, so few trails".

Amen to that...

There was a day when you could ride Squally Creek/Little Buffalo out of Robbinsville, catch Hooper Bald trail at the top, and run it and Stateline trail all the way to Stateline Campground at Tellico. Or you could turn off the Little Buffalo side and drop down into Dentons and choose whether to turn left or right. Left, and you could climb Little Snowbird, cruise the ridge trail over to Joanna Bald, and hit the Andrews-Robbinsville overmountain road into either side of the mountain, OR turn right, run the old RR grade to the Stateline Trail. or go straight and come into Tellico Trail 8 at the trail 10 intersection.

There was even a time not so long ago when you could go from the Virginia Creeper Trail outside Lansing in Ashe County to what's now Callalante without ever getting on a road. Ah yes, when the Alzheimer's settles all the way in, I'll think I can still do all those trails. I'm sorta lookin' forward to it.

So I found Globe Road. Very intresting Road, some really cool sights to see on it, no major off roading, but still, very senic!

I ended up at Richlands last night. Very awesome place!

I thought Richlands was closed too?

I was under the impression that it was as well. I was told by numerous people that its actually a state road (one being a Police officer in the area...) so I didnt think it was closed. I also saw No No tresspassing signs, and there are houses right off some of the roads so I thought it was open.

We actually started up at Penley Road somewhere off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I think there were supposed to be sign at the 1st stream crossing, but I haven't been up there in a few months. Hopefully it was just a temporary thing.

I have often considered getting a clean up day organized for Richlands as a good faith gesture between the wheelers and the landowners...
