We have decided to sell the wife's 2017 VW GTI. The blue book on it is still north of $20k, anyone ever sell a vehicle this new? Most of my experience is selling either classics or cheap old cars....people always seem to have money for something rare or cheap....we are debating whether selling the car privately is going to yield people with money, or if it will be an endless slog of people needing to get financing from a bank, yada yada?

We have a respectable offer from a local dealer, debating if cash in hand is worth the loss, we are going back to cheap cars, this car has been awesome, and it is nice to have a new, reliable car, but it will be nice to not have to park at the back of the parking lot every time.

I have never had an issue with people financing the cars i have sold. Just meet them at the bank they are financing, cut the check and make some signatures.
how much loss are we talking? 500 bucks or 5k

newer cars are actually easier than used in my opinion, due to easier financing. Ihave had older cars that have been "sold" but the bank loan fell through due to miles or years.

It's pretty close, but when you have already lost so much in depreciation, every little bit you can save is nice. Posted an ad here, I won't be going craigslist with this one.....she may put it on the facebooks

If your gonna do FB you might as well do CL.Same bunch of idiots.

Most reputable people buying a $20k plus car won’t have any issue with financing. In fact most people aren’t paying in cash for something like that anyway. Financing to buy from an individual is pretty easy.

When I bought my wife’s van, I called Truliant and had a check the next day. If I’d made the call earlier it would have been the same day, but I paid a chunk in cash anyway. I only had to physically go to the bank to pick up the check. The rest was on the phone and made simple. You can even get pre approved and have everything already setup so you can move quickly when you do find what you want.

I sold a 2013 Tacoma with 14000 miles on it a couple of years ago. Had several offers from people that buy for dealers. Had one guy get pretty hateful with me over a couple hundred dollars....lol. He asked me how much did I owe that I couldn't take 200 less. When I told him that it was paid for it blew his mind. I figured that if I was gonna give somebody a deal, it might as well be an individual, not a car dealer. Could have sold the truck to a dealer for what I sold it to the guy for. I felt good, he felt good, was a win win for me.

I bought a brand new Tacoma in 2010. Shortly after, bought a boat that weighed a little more than the Tacoma liked. Sold it to carmax that same year and actually made money.

Take it by a carmax they will buy it even if you are not buying from them and often give really good deals.

I have never once had them give me a good deal.

We recently looked at trading in my wife's 08 Grand Cherokee. It is really nice, one of the nicest ones I've seen of that era. We've taken great care of it. Went to Thompson and looked at a car, they offered $4800 on trade which I thought was fair. We ended up not liking the car that much so didn't do the deal. Found another one we liked at Carmax so went to look at that one. They offered us $2300 on the trade or to purchase outright. I laughed at them. Guy said "well, Thompson probably offered more and then made it up in the price of the vehicle" to which I informed him that the newer, lower mileage, higher optioned car at Thompson was about $3k less after it was all said and done than it would be at their store.

I've sold and traded in 1 year old cars a couple times for MORE than I paid when I bought it new. I was told it's more about 1) is it the right car (what's hot) 2) is it the right time of year for that car (you don't sell a convertible in the winter) 3) 1-3 year old cars are also extremely mileage sensitive...there's a big price difference between 19,000 miles and 20,000 miles on a one year old car.

If your car is less than 7 years old and under 100,000 or 120,000 miles, carmax is fair. Anything over that they dont put on their lot so they're basically giving you what they expect to get at auction.

I've looked into selling 3 cars to them. One I took their offer, one the Toyota dealer was slightly higher, third was just to get an idea of price and it was low because CEL was on.

I have never gotten an offer from carmax that was more than 2/3 low trade-in. I took an 8 year old Sierra Denali to them and they offered me $2k because "it has 120k miles, we will just have to auction it off"
I might give them a try, we own the car outright, and aren't in need of a quick sale.....but once I want something out of the driveway it consumes my thoughts until the deed is done.

I sold a on '07 Civic Si sedan to them in I think 2012 with 92,000 miles for $9k. I owed $9,200.

I got a quote on an '09 Venza in 2014 with 77,000 for $16k and sold to dealer for $16,500.

If bought and sold cars like that both as a seller and buyer.

I'd put it some where serious like autotrader. You might have to pay for it to get on there but it's on there.

I sold a car to a guy who flew in and drove out. I didn't even have a title in hand. It is definitely doable.

The nice part is that you are selling a 20k car not a $150 go-kart. You are also selling a very specific car, probably not many of them with the 6 speed. You'll probably get an enthusiast to buy it.

Just remember the value of the trade knocks down how much tax you pay on the new car. If trade in and your selling it prices are close it may tip it in favor of trading.

Does NC not have a cap on vehicle sales tax? SC is $500 (used to be $300).

Good point, I think it’s capped just under that. And in re-reading the original post, there’s no trade, just selling to a dealer.
Either way, if the prices are close and I don’t have to deal with hagglers and time wasters I’m taking the path of least resistance.

We have it posted here, and will probably see what interest there is on the facebooks.....after that, we may just take the Carvana offer to get it gone.

Carmax was a waste of time, I did take the time to walk the lot.....I see why they have stopped airing the "not carmax worthy" commercials. They had a 2012 Avenger with what looked like 3-different shades of red and orange peel for days.....and they were asking $13k!

I am going to post the link, they don't have pictures yet....hopefully they post some soon.....I wasn't sure if the red / black interior was a factory option or not, but it looked awful!

Well, like many of you mentioned, I was contacted by a local car dealer who wanted the car to put on their pre-owned lot. They beat the Carvana offer by enough to make the juice worth the squeeze, it was a fair deal that got us into the "private party value" on KBB and it was no muss, no fuss. They told me it will sell quick on their lot....and I am sure it will, the perks of on-site finance managers.
