It's somewhat gratifying in an assholish sorta way.
(Yeah, I'll admit to being jealous back then of a 16-year old driving a new Mustang 5.0, BMW, Mercedees, etc.
I was one of those kids and having "everything" before you're due or having worked for it, is a punishment in the long run. You've peaked at 16-18 its all down hill after that.

Tough line to say whether they'll do better if they aren't burdened by having to study and hold down a job and only to study, or whether having to do both will give them motivation to succeed.. Guess it's a case-by-case thing.
Fortunately, that's not a decision I'll ever have to make.. :D
Sink or swim...survival of the fittest. I'm tired of laws that make kids wear helmets or make it illegal to spank your kid without a visit from Social Services. We are conforming our laws and rules to raise a generation of entitlement/pussies, and we wonder why there is a general decline of common courtesy/respect among our youth. Hard work and adversity makes a strong person and good character. If you can't handle a little work while you're in school, I hope you got a big trust fund when you hit LIFE.

i am bad with money, i buy parts and alchohal. :flipoff2:

wish i could help. but it is differentfor everyone, and everyone has ideas. just be sure to diversify, it is a long time off. i had spread out a retirement plan when i was 18, i am now 24, and it is already worth more than i can make in 1.5 years of work, of course i put in a big chunk at that point. i only put in 200 bucks a month.

EDIT: i was high on my numbers...

I said nothing of the sort. Read again.

You said that Mikey should hide financial assets so that his kids would be eligible for scholarships that they would otherwise be disqualified from receiving. While you may not have explicitly stated it, that sort of response results directly from an attitude that you're owed something.

Scholarships can be rightly defined as entitlements funded by the wealthy for those less fortunate. Whether we're talking government grants and scholarships (funded by the collective 'society' wealth) or private charity scholarships (funded exclusively by the wealthy and well-to-do middle class, since those too poor to afford necessity don't have the means to donate to charity), you're talking about entitlements for the poor. If a scholarship has income limitations, it's because those establishing the scholarship seek to provide for poorer students, leaving wealthier ones to provide for their own educations.

That you would defraud an organization in order to receive their scholarship money can only result from a belief that you are entitled to it, regardless of the limitations (however arbitrary) with which they determine eligibility. You've determined yourself to be above the scrutiny of their rules, all the while telling yourself that your rules are more "fair" than theirs. More fair to you, perhaps. But in so doing, you overlook the basis for your own reasoning. You're hiding your own wealth *because* you believe that your education should be free. Or rather, because you believe someone else should be obligated to pay for it. That money doesn't just appear -- it is provided by the wealthy.

So yes, you did say it.

As far as the ethecial concerns. When the govt stops wasting my hard earned money I will quit trying to screw them out of every nickel I can.

I retract all of my personal statements and revert to this... well said Franklin. :p

Oh:

Funny, it doesn't say anything about financial merit.

But really, it's pretty presumptuous of you, Shawn, to define and judge my statements by twisting them with your personal definitions, especially when you don't know much of anything about my upbringing or values, and how that affects my point of view and attitude on subjects such as these, and what I see as being "owed".
I don't give a damn if you disagree on the advice that was given through me to Mike, but don't try to tell the world what I believe based on your own definitions.

I'm done with this. Comment to your heart's content.

mikey - was listening to cnn at lunch i got a new plan for ya...

potty trained at 7 months old.. Think of all the diaper money you can add to the school fund..

Rich, maybe you need to consult a better dictionary than "wordnet".

No one is being presumptuous here. You did state that it would be a good idea for Mikey to hide assets in order to be eligible for financial benefits that he wouldn't otherwise qualify. That's not a "judgement call" to define that behavior as fraud or theft. If someone looks down on you because of it, then maybe. But that's not the point here, and it never was.

If you're conflicted about how the things you say and do disagree with your own perceptions of your values or beliefs, perhaps you need to consider more carefully what you say before you say it.

In either case, I don't see where my personal opinions of you or the situation figure in.

Damn, didn't mean to start such a ruckus.
Let me clarify a few of my points, strangely enough me and Rich hav some similarioties here that result in opposing view points. I grew up with nothin.. hell we lived in travel trailer that was pulled to a campground for sewage dumping once a week(let the redneck jokes begin). I went to college initially on an athletic scholarship (lucky me) then 1 year in was injured and had it revoked (back to the story of my life) I worked a full time job plus a work study, busted my ass in the classoom and borrowed my ass off.
Today I am out, and through being ridiculously thifty I paid off 15K in debt in my first 3 years.
I do not feel as though I would have appreciated it nearly as much if I didnt have that debt and those experinces to draw on everyday I wake up!
Having said that I am preparing to pay for my kids college, but they do not and will not ever know that. They will work and use student loans, the day they graduate those loans will disappear, if they drop out.... welcome to the real world... and real debt

Am I strict? YES
Am I overboard? some would say so
But I hope I will raise good hard working children with integrity.
BTW on the subject of children, I do not believe any child should be given an allowance, it sends the wrong message this world does not make allowances for people, I pay my 5 year old comissions for the jobs he does around the house... and my 3 year oldcan't wait until next year when sh can get a "job"....I also make my kids Tithe, and split the remainder into 3 categories, spending, saving and giving....
Oh well off the hijack....

The backup plan should be give the kid a knocked down 7 iron at age 4, grab a 12 pack and park your ass at the driving range every afternoon.
