Anyone got a 97/98 TJ in N Raleigh and want to meet for lunch?

If you need me to yank you anywhere, just let me know. I've been hauling Firebirds all over the Triangle these last couple of weeks.
Is it not running, or doing something weird?
Still not running.
I replaced the engine, but I didn't pay enough attention pulling the old one out.
I've got two, "ground" wires, and not 100% on where they go.
I figured as long as it completed the circuit via block they'd be fine.
I was wrong.
So when I tried starting it, the starter motor sparked from the starter to the solenoid. (And promptly drained my battery.)

So trying to figure out where the hell these two wires go. :)

Then once it's running, I need to replace the water pump gasket, cause apparently I failed at setting it properly, so it was leaking.
:(

Jesus, we let you youngin's in the garage and you get all mouthy.

but we're in general chit chat

But you used to be polite. Trying to prove you had respect. Now we let you in the garage, and you show your colors.

Hell, at this point you can say whatever you want, if it would some how make my damn jeep work.

you reckon my 99 xj would have the same wiring setup as your tj? if anyone can confirm that it does, ill ride over and let you look at it, im not doing shit this afternoon.

It should be close? It's got a distributor right? Not the coils system?
If not maybe another set of eyes can figure out why my starter makes lightning instead of starting the jeep.

i mean yeah its got a distributor. i cant think of a reason anything in the engine bay should be different, a few things might be rearranged a little bit but thats it.

shoot me a pm with your addy if you want me to run over so you can take a look.

If the starter is doing that then it sounds like that is your problem. I have swapped a 4.0 around a couple times now and I just put the grounds where ever they fit. Never had a problem. Sounds like you just swapped this motor in. Did you use the same harness that was in the TJ? What did the motor come out of?

I would look into the grounds, you did put the one that goes from the block back to the frame didn't you? Sounds like you might have pinched a hot wire and then when you pulled the current through to turn the starter it arc'd over and drained the battery.

When I swapped the 6-spd into my Trans Am I took out my good starter and put it in my garage, then installed everything and put the starter back in.

Did the same thing as yours, and I spent hours searching for the problem. Turned out my starter had mysteriously gone bad sitting in my shop for a month. Who knows, may be something as simple as that.

Yea, only one I'm not sure about is a black/yellow wire I "think" is a ground.
I attached it to the engine block, same bolt as another ground wire.
I just hate my jeep at this point. :D

let me know what wiring diagram you need and i can email it to you.
I have the FSM, I never found this ()*#@(@*( wire on it.

So anyway, Andrew comes over, we look. Can't figure it out.
Take the two wires off, resistance test to verify they ARE grounds, they are.
Re attach them to a ground. (The SAME ground) She turns right over.
Won't start, but turns over.
Then the starter makes a god awful noise, disengages, and happily spins. So I think she's toast.

PM me your contact info and you can look at one of my TJs. I have a 97 4.0 and a 98 2.5. I will be driving the 6cyl rig to work tomorrow.

Thanks.
I need to swing by the shop tomorrow anyway, as you have some bits for me.
:)

(Those weren't as important as getting the engine running)
But the engine is good now. :D
I was about 60 degrees off with the timing.
:D
Oops.
