Anyone have experience with the larger size Irok Radials

So I'm in an unusual position. I bought a set of 42" TSL Sx II's for my JK I rebuilt over the winter and I just can't seem to get rid of a wobble out of the tires that restricts me to around 50MPH or less. I've run TSL Sx's on other Jeeps and not had this problem so 4WP's was nice enough to put them on the balancer and spin them for me. We observed some side to side wobble which is exactly the problem I have on the road.

Ryan from 4WP's called Interco for me and they are willing to give me a new set of tires at no cost and they will verify them before they leave their factory. The catch is they said I can get the same tires or another tire they make. So with that said the only other tire that kind of matches my needs is the 41" Irok Radial. Unfortunately I am running 20" wheels so I'm limited on options.

So with that said does anyone have any experience with larger Irok radials. I'm curious as to how they ride down the road. I know the bias work decent off road and weren't bad on the road as I had them on an old TJ but they were only 36's. I have no experience with the radials. I use my Jeep for going to Jeep events around the country and I have to be able to drive it on the road when I get to the destination and right now I can't really do that because it's really only safe up to 45 mph.

I'd love to hear some feedback before I make my decision. I have about a week to figure out which way I want to go.

Can't comment on radial iroks but my 42" bias plies, hydro balanced with 9oz water/antifreeze is quite amazing for a big tire. I still get one that wants to hop ever so slightly around 45-50 but up to 90 mph its smooth.

I ran 39.5 and the 41 iroks on my 2500 in my profile on 20x10 mt classic II. I loved them on the highway ran air soft bb's in them to balance cant remember exactly how much but what dynabead's website recommended for the tire size. I never aired them down but once out on the OBX and mostly red clay mud logging/hunting roads around the house never had a single complaint out of them

My dads 42" bias iroks are way smoother than my 42" sx2's on 16.5's

Mine shake and wobble just as you describe, I just deal with it as it sees very little road time over 45 mph. Ran several different sets of sx's in the past that were great on the road.

Iroks are far better on the road, heck my 44" boggers were better on the road than the 42" sx2's.

But the sx2 beats them all offroad.

I was actually considering a 42 sx2 as my next tire. Having read many review similar to this, I think I'll go with bias maxxis treps in the 40" genre.

Well I guess that rules out those tires for my k5 build lol

It's funny because I have a buddy that runs the 43's on his jku and he says they are fine. I've tried everything I can think of with these things. I've tried different toe settings, caster settings, spinning the tires on the wheel, different locations etc. If I could do 55-60 without feeling like I was going to go into death wobble I'd be fine but by about 50 it's getting pretty hairy. I tried without the ram hooked up and I didn't get a 1/8 mile out of my neighborhood before I turned around.

Well it looks like if I'm going to stay with Interco I'm going to have to try the Iroks then. Or I may just get another set of SXII's and sell them and put krawlers back on it. That's what I should have put on it in the first place.

I had a long talk with a tire salesman one time, and was told that most bias ply tires of a larger size statistically are more out of round than round. Bassically said you can buy 20 of one size to find 4 that are actually true.

I've had 33, 35, 38.5", and 42" sx, and the 42s are a handful at 55 mph.

I've driven it on trips of 60 miles or so at 55-60, but don't recommend it.

The 38.5's, 42" iroks and 44" boggers I had up to 70mph with the normal bias ply interco "shake" that is bearable.

By far the best tire on the road was my 36" iroks. These ran smooth and true. I put 40k miles on them daily driving the jeep.

I love the sx2 offroad, but as much time as I spend on pavement, my next set will either be 43" sx stickys or 39" red labels.

I actually considered buying a set of Procomp radial mts 40" for 17 as a street/mild trail tire.

There's little I love more than a good drive in the Jeep. I just cannot justify buying a tire that'll prohibit it from its road abilities. Drive to work, to the beach, go get ice cream, parades, car shows, whatever.....

Are you sure the wheel isn't bent a little off center? If it was just one that they noted the wobble on, I would pull that tire and spin just the rim.

I want some 40" MT2s as well. I used to have a set of Xterrains and they were awesome and rode amazingly. Hard to beat 399 a tire for a radial 40.

Those SX IIs have a LOT of rubber far away from the center of rotation. It's amazing that they ride as well as they do.

So do you think the 43" SX's would run better. I'm really gun shy right now with the SX's. I've run 35, 36, and 38.5 SX's without any problems.

The Pro Comp Extreme Mt's are great tires. I had them on my Ram and really liked them. My buddy just put a set of 40's on his JK that I'm eager to see how they do offroad on his rig.

43sx is another option. I think it all depends on whether you want more offroad performance or better street handling. I would probly stay 42/43sx, 41.5/42 PBR, or 42 BFG

I built the JK around 42's but I can do a little more cutting and axle moving to probably make 43's work. Does any one have experience with the 43" SX's running down the road. If I could get a credit I would put 42" BFG Krawlers on it.

I would, but i won't.
:)

Biggest thing you will regret about iroks, even radials; if you drive alot on the street, they will wear to nothing extremely quick. The tread is soft and I don't think the depth is as much as a tsl/sx. But they are quieter and smoother than a sx because the voids are smaller.

Like he said^ iroks do wear quickly and another thing I noticed also is 10-15 lbs street pressure is way better than 20+ and will help them wear more evenly.
