My wife and I were talking about it last night. With moving to the new house, we are thinking about trying this. Right now we have UVerse and like it ok, but we realized that we NEVER watch anything live. Almost everything we record and watch later.

Thinking about hooking up the TVs to a Roku box or PS3 or something. Then connect them to the internet and we can stream Hulu, Netflix, vidoes off of the internet, etc.

I know we'll still have to pay the monthly fee for Netflix and stuff, but two on-demand movies from UVerse is equal to a month of Netflix.

The main concern is what channels we can get with Hulu, how does it compare to cable/sattelite. We need to get Disney channel or my two kids will go crazy. Scratch that, we will go crazy without Disney to pacify them.

Also gotta be able to watch Homeland on Showtime.

Any ideas? All our TVs are HD compatible and will have a network connection available.

Exactly why we haven't done it thus far. Disney and Nick Jr is the whole reason we have cable. Everything else just comes with it.

Subscribed...Interested in hearing opinions on this. I don't have any children to pacify, and everything but football, I watch recorded anyway. When out of town and trying to watch from my computer, I've found Hulu to have a time lapse on some networks/shows...ie you could be waiting a week or two before it shows up.

There's so much free/Prime kid crap on Amazon, we don't even have a need for Netflix... but the selection on Netflix is equally huge.

We haven't had cable in years. Best money I never spent.

I'm down to the 14 channel cable. Used to be 20 or so channels. They keep upping the cost and removing channels. Right now it is about $25 for what we can get with rabbit ears. It's going to go bye bye. Amazon and Netflix FTW

Loathing the Benjamin ransom each month! What are the options?

I have decent bandwidth (read: relatively cheap 5mb DSL) tied to my POTS line that NEVER goes down or sets off the home alarm like when TW ran diags on the slick *EVERY* night between 0030-0200

I haven't had cable in a couple years. Been using the digital antenna. Netflix has a ton of stuff to stream but it seems to be a couple seasons behind.

Recently, I plugged back into the cable and did a channel scan. I still get all the over the air channels clearly and Disney comes in too.

I haven't had cable for at least 2 years now and I can't find any reason ever to pay that much again for TV, hulu Netflix together about 20 bucks a month and I don't get to see every movie I want to see or every TV show I want to see but I see enough to not worry about it cables price is just too unpredictable and bounced around way too much if you have time warner you know exactly what I mean, honestly don't even want to watch TV as much anymore which is awesome , all because I got rid of cable.

talk to text needs to learn how to make sentences lol

We have not had cable since 2008, cancelled cable internet in probably 2011 as well. Antenna, free internet off phone (unlimited data), and Netflix. We plug the phone into the TV and watch Netflix that way. Our cell service is pretty crappy/spotty so sometimes it doesn't work well.

We dropped cable a few years ago and don't miss it all (well, I miss MotoGP/AMA Motorcycle Racing, but I'm ok without it). We get everything from broadcast TV, free Hulu, and paid Netflix. If you wanna see whats on Netflix instant, shoot me a PM, and I'll send you my login info. There's alot on there, but may or may not be useful to you.

Playon is the way to go if you have a gaming console, its kind of like a media server. It's 5 bucks a month and I can watch anything and everything I want. I can download different scripts that are dedicated to certain channels like Disney or the History channel. I can even watch some of the newest movies. I have a ps3 in 3 rooms just for this reason. Check it out http://www.playon.tv/playon

I heard that Disney is on Netflix though, is that right? If we can't get Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Austin & Allie, that's a deal breaker.

You've got a problem. And cable TV is just a symptom of it.

Amazon Prime comes with a bunch of free stuff. We get prime for the free 2nd day shipping. Free Duck Dynasty is gravy.

The Roku II is pretty cool. I'm trying to decide what I want to do once my house is done in a few months. I'm going to have GOOD internet, but I can certainly live without cable.

I wish that I could drop it. I hate spending 80 a month on cable...but I love watching TV. Although now that I am a homeowner....I find myself watching it less and less...maybe I can work up to not having cable.

I gave up directv a few years ago and set up a media PC. I can record two over the air broadcasts at the same time while watching something pre recorded or off the Internet. We do have Netflix but most current cable shows we just stream the next day from project-freetv.com. I use sidereel.com to track what ever shows my family wants to watch so we can keep up with episodes in order. What we record off air is always full HD and most of what we stream is too. Our only big expense is the Internet now, we pay something like $65/mo for Internet and phone.

I've been thinking about this as well. I've cancelled all my premium cable channels like hbo/Showtime and have found that if you wait a day or two that you can "find" whatever shows you want to watch over the internet. I've looked into the roku, and that seems like a good idea. I just hook the laptop up to the tv with an hdmi. If I could talk my wife into letting it go I would. I will say that Netflix kind of sucks movie wise. It seems that there really aren't many good newer movies on there that are worth watching. Lots of b movies.
